The harm to servants and others is to completely abandon them, not leaving them any share. Even if wives and sons are given to others, it should not contradict their wishes, or ultimately, they should be given knowing that they will not become very miserable, rather than making them very miserable. Giving retinues to inauspicious beings such as yakshas and rakshasas, etc., in short, not harming the retinues that one possesses is to give with subsequent protection. Giving without seeking is to know that sentient beings are impoverished, and even if they do not specifically ask, to give from one's own hand for their benefit, rather than completely seeking other places to give, or not choosing to give to this one and not to that one, selecting fields of merit and not giving, but giving equally without partiality. Giving without attachment or clinging is to give without expecting reward or fruition. This is explained from the aspect of purifying faults. Furthermore, from the aspect of qualities, there are nine types, such as giving everything or giving completely. Giving completely is to not leave anything, internal or external, without leaving anything at all. Giving extensively or widely is to not give small or meager things, but to give many and extensive things. Giving the principal thing is to not give damaged, rotten, or unusable things, but to give things that are perfect in color, shape, and scent, and good and precious things. Giving constantly is not giving sometimes and not giving at other times, but giving constantly and continuously. Giving joyfully is to give without a miserly mind, with joy, to anyone who asks, regardless of whether they are given to or not. Giving without impurity is to give without expecting reward or fruition. Giving purely is the same as the previously mentioned giving of a pure basis, which is to give pure things. Dedicating the giving to enlightenment is to not dedicate the giving to the happiness of the heavens or the nirvana of hearers and solitary realizers, but to dedicate it for the benefit of all sentient beings, in order to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, thereby striving for unsurpassed enlightenment. Dedicating the giving to virtue is the same as the previously mentioned giving that benefits others, which is to gather sentient beings with giving, thereby striving for or establishing them in virtue.

Thus, the happiness that arises from giving is: like the happiness of rejoicing in giving itself, and the happiness of benefiting others, and the happiness of completing the accumulations for enlightenment, the bodhisattva who is satisfied with these three kinds of happiness and possesses loving-kindness, rejoices by completely giving away all of his possessions, and those who have obtained all desired enjoyments will not rejoice in this way by indulging in those enjoyments. The enjoyers mentioned here refer to the recipients of the bodhisattva's giving, those who have obtained all that they desire, they cannot rejoice like the giver, as explained in the commentaries. In general, even those who enjoy the perfect enjoyments of the heavenly realms have never experienced the joy of giving like that of a bodhisattva, it can also be said. As it is said in the Collection of Precious Qualities: "The four continents, well adorned, are like the ashes of spittle, Having given, one rejoices, the joy of obtaining the continents is not like that." Just as it is said. Seventh, explaining the cause of arising compassion: compassion arises for those sentient beings who are separated from the practice of the six perfections, due to the control of miserliness, their minds become impoverished and stingy, and for those who cannot even give a little, with loving-kindness, the faults of miserliness and the virtues of giving are explained, thereby establishing them in the Dharma of giving; for those who are of evil disposition, cruel, and engage in evil deeds such as killing, with loving-kindness, the Dharma of possessing morality is taught, thereby establishing them in morality; for those whose minds are completely disturbed by anger, with loving-kindness, the faults of hatred and the Dharma of the virtues of patience are taught, thereby establishing them in patience; for those who delight in ordinary affairs, and due to the control of laziness do not engage in virtuous deeds, the negligent ones, with loving-kindness, the Dharma of diligence that abandons laziness is taught, thereby establishing them in diligence; for those who are controlled by the objects of the five desirable qualities, and whose minds are always distracted, with compassion, the Dharma of meditation is taught, thereby establishing them in meditation; for those who cling to the contaminated aggregates as permanent, self, pure, and pleasurable, appearing in a reversed manner, with compassion, the faults of wrong view are explained.
