I instruct, saying, "May all beings be happy through these enjoyments," and I follow suit. Here, although it is explained that compassion, like a teacher, instructs generosity, like a student, I think it is acceptable to explain it this way because the meaning is the same and easy to understand. If others are made happy by enjoyments, but one hopes to receive the fruit of that for oneself alone, then that generosity is not the way of a Bodhisattva. Because Bodhisattvas do not want to separate their own benefit from the benefit of others, they suffer when others suffer, and they feel happy when others are happy. Therefore, they give away the fruit of their generosity, wishing that it may ripen for all sentient beings and bring them happiness. Or, if it does not ripen for others, since the benefit of oneself and sentient beings are not different, one does not wish for the happiness of the fruit to come to oneself alone. Because when sentient beings are happy, one is naturally happy as well, therefore, I abandon cherishing myself as if it were poison, and follow the Bodhisattvas who cherish others greatly. Therefore, I instruct that the generosity I have made, together with the fruit of generosity, be given to all sentient beings. Therefore, if generosity, you have something to do for me, such as bringing enjoyment, then let it fully ripen into the fruit for those other sentient beings, and that would be the greatest help to me. In the manner of compassion instructing generosity, I give away generosity together with its fruit to others. In this way, the fruit of generosity is also given away from the depths of one's heart to other sentient beings. The Bodhisattvas who give, even if they do not desire enjoyment, it is fine, because having extremely abundant enjoyment and encountering good things is the nature of cause and effect and dependent origination. When that happens, I do not desire the happiness of contaminated enjoyment, but I only wish that through the wealth of enjoyment, I can engage in the work of generosity that benefits sentient beings in life after life. I always use all my possessions with love, not for my own enjoyment.

Now, observe what it means to give completely to others, and therefore, O almsgiving, know that I do not seek the fruit of that almsgiving. If you only give objects of enjoyment to others, and you, the almsgiver, do not relinquish the attainment of the fruit of enjoyment, then you will not become a Bodhisattva who is manifestly delighted in giving without attachment to all things of enjoyment in future lives. For, if even for a moment in this life, there is no interest in giving, and there is a mind that does not wish to give, then it will not be the case that one is manifestly delighted in giving for the sake of others with compassion. O almsgiving, you seem not to look at cause and effect as if no fruit will arise if almsgiving is not done. Like this, looking at the reward of giving alms, it is not out of compassion for others that it is a part or due of oneself. O almsgiving, since you are free from looking for reward, you also do not take the ripening fruit as your own, but give it entirely to others. This is how compassion speaks to almsgiving, showing how to train the mind in the way of giving completely to others without attachment to one's own benefit in all things such as body, possessions, and roots of virtue. Summarizing and praising the meaning of the virtues of almsgiving with compassion, there are three verses such as "The love of the princes." The almsgiving done with the compassion of the sons of the Victorious Ones is sixfold: Without fault, which is giving without harming others. For example, taking from others and giving to others, killing sentient beings and giving their flesh, and insulting beggars, scolding them with words of hunger and so on, causing suffering in their minds and then giving, and so on, are all giving well and properly without harming other sentient beings. Giving a pure place or basis is not giving unexamined objects such as poison and weapons, which are impure objects, but examining them and giving pure and clean objects. The almsgiving that benefits is that which, having been gathered by almsgiving and applied to virtue, causes those sentient beings who are the objects of almsgiving to lead to the happiness of the fruits of higher realms and liberation in future lives, and also, through almsgiving, one's own retinue of children and
