Just as one does not practice saving from suffering. Bodhisattvas, until the end of samsara, act to accomplish the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, therefore they are those with great compassion. Although sentient beings have compassion for friends, it is not always the case, and sometimes anger arises; they have anger towards enemies, so they have not separated from afflictions; although Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have actual anger, they have not abandoned its subtle imprints, so their compassion cannot be called great compassion, but Bodhisattvas, with respect to the latent tendencies of anger and harm, which are contrary to compassion, are free from desire, so it is great compassion; although there is compassion, it does not focus on the characteristics of the three spheres of compassion, so it is not great compassion, but that which is endowed with non-discriminating wisdom is great compassion. Although there are those who assert that this is the state of complete maturation of non-discrimination from the eighth ground onwards, it is not inappropriate to apply it to the general body of noble Bodhisattvas. Thus, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva that has been explained, such ultimate, spontaneously accomplished, objectless great compassion, is called the great compassion of the Buddha in the Buddha-ground. Although compassion and loving-kindness are the same in meaning, differing only in the presence or absence of honorifics, the distinction of "great" should be understood as explained earlier. Thus, the six aspects that have been explained, such as inequality and impermanence, are not loving great compassion, but that which is endowed with the characteristics of the six opposites is great compassion. As just explained, that which does not have great love is not called a Bodhisattva with great compassion. Secondly, showing the greatness of great compassion with examples, the five verses beginning with "compassion and patience," just as a good tree has six things: roots, trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, so too does the great compassion of the example. The great compassion that desires to protect all sentient beings from suffering, and the patience of enduring various hardships for the sake of others, and the various means of manifesting

And how to think about benefiting sentient beings. Vow to obtain perfect body, resources, retinue and place in all lifetimes for the sake of benefiting sentient beings. With the power of aspiration, no matter where one is reborn, one can obtain many rebirths that benefit oneself and others. And through this way, sentient beings are completely matured. First, great compassion is like the root of the latter five. Just like the root of all the qualities of a Bodhisattva, it precedes. As it is said in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Wisdom: "Wise Sharadati's son, just like exhaling and inhaling are the antecedents of a person's life force. Similarly, in order to perfectly accomplish the Great Vehicle, the great compassion of a Bodhisattva precedes." As it is said in the Noble Gaya Mountain Sutra: "The root of a Bodhisattva's Bodhicitta is great compassion, and sentient beings are the object." As it is said. Finally, maturing sentient beings is like the most excellent fruit that is fully ripened on a tree, this tree is the great tree of compassion. Therefore, it is said that relying on the root of great compassion, for the benefit of sentient beings, the trunk of enduring various sufferings can arise. Relying on the trunk of endurance, the method of thinking about liberating sentient beings from suffering can arise, just like a branch. From the branch of method thinking, because one rebirth alone cannot benefit limitless sentient beings, one vows to gradually obtain the rebirth of limitless sentient beings in all rebirths, just like a leaf. From the leaf of aspiration, flowers of rebirth that are desired for the benefit of sentient beings can arise. From the flowers of rebirth, the fruit of completely maturing sentient beings can arise. Therefore, it is praised like a good tree. In order to explain this in detail, first, it is shown from the way that if there is no root, the others will disappear: just like if a tree has no root, there will be no trunk to fruit, if there is no great compassion like the root, then for the benefit of sentient beings, one will not be able to endure asceticism with joy.
