It should be understood that one relies on the Dharma of the Great Vehicle through faith, and combines it with the nine intentions mentioned above. Empowerment means relying on it through obtaining empowerment in samadhi. That is, relying on it by offering immeasurable enjoyment through the samadhi of the Treasury of Space, and through the means of holding words and meanings without forgetting them through Dharani, etc. Completely grasping the means of non-discrimination, and bodhisattvas above the eighth ground merge into one creator, entering into all and the same meaning, that is, possessing any of these five situations is also superior to other reliance. Third, in the four immeasurable minds, there are two parts: explaining the four immeasurable minds and explaining compassion separately. The first part includes the explanation of the essence, object, classification, fruit, contradictory aspects, and merits, which are explained through six aspects. First, the four immeasurable minds of a Bodhisattva have four characteristics, that is, the abode of Brahma in the stable continuum of a Bodhisattva, the four of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are in order the contradictory aspects of loving-kindness, etc., anger, harm, displeasure, and the four of attachment and aversion that cause the mind to be unequal are abandoned, possessing the wisdom of non-discrimination as a companion, the object involves three: sentient beings, Dharma, and no object, and the function is not abandoning all sentient beings and making them mature, which is possessing four characteristics. Among them, the first function of loving-kindness is to abandon anger through loving-kindness, hoping to encounter happiness. The practitioner of loving-kindness, the object sentient beings, the Dharma to be practiced, such as loving-kindness, not clinging to the three wheels like this is the second function. Entering the three objects is the third characteristic. The loving-kindness of ordinary people and heretics is directed towards sentient beings who cling to the existence of self and sentient beings, and the loving-kindness of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is that even if there is no so-called self and sentient beings, it is only directed towards the many dharmas of the five aggregates, impermanence, and the nature of suffering, and loving-kindness arises. The loving-kindness of Bodhisattvas who have attained the ground and Buddhas is that in the ultimate sense, they do not cling to sentient beings and Dharma, although their nature is emptiness, but self-

I, like sentient beings who experience illusory suffering, realize their essence is emptiness, and without clinging to any object, perform immeasurable deeds that benefit sentient beings. Among them, the four immeasurables that only focus on sentient beings are common to the five: ordinary beings, heretics, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas. Loving-kindness and so on that focus on the Dharma are common to the four: Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas. Unfocused loving-kindness is unique to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as stated in the Yogacarabhumi-shastra. In the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence, it is said: The loving-kindness of Bodhisattvas who initially generate the mind of enlightenment is focused on sentient beings because they have not directly realized the two selflessnesses; the loving-kindness of Bodhisattvas who engage in practice from the first to the seventh bhumis is focused on the Dharma because they directly focus on the completely pure realm of Dharma; the loving-kindness of those who have attained tolerance of the unborn Dharma from the eighth bhumi onwards is without focus because loving-kindness arises effortlessly without conceptualization. This is what is said in the sutra. Second, the objects of the four, loving-kindness and so on, are: The objects of the stable Bodhisattvas' four, loving-kindness and so on, are focused on sentient beings who desire happiness; loving-kindness is the aspect of wishing sentient beings to have happiness; compassion is focused on sentient beings who are tormented by suffering, with the aspect of wishing them to be free from suffering; joy is focused on sentient beings who have happiness, with the aspect of wishing them not to be separated from happiness; equanimity is focused on sentient beings who experience pleasure, and who, upon encountering friends and so on, generate attachment, and who, upon encountering suffering and enemies and so on, generate hatred, and who are afflicted with disturbing emotions, with the aspect of wishing that they would not generate attachment and hatred, and thus become without attachment and hatred, and remain in a state of equanimity. The above explains which category of sentient beings each is focused on. Loving-kindness focused on the Dharma is: focused on the treatises that explain the four immeasurables, that is, the authentic Mahayana sutra pitaka, thereby setting the object only as the nature of phenomena that are conditioned. The loving-kindness that focuses is
