Guarding: Regarding even the slightest fault as fearful, and properly taking up and studying all the grounds of training. Among these, the first is to properly guard the precepts. Second, possessing the proper use of Dharma garments, etc., and not being reproached by the noble ones. Third, abandoning entering the five places that are not proper places of conduct, such as prostitution, butchery, and selling alcohol. Fourth, being governed by the precepts of definite renunciation. Fifth, ensuring not to be defiled by even the slightest fault. Sixth, fully studying all four trainings. The cause is being possessed by the thought of peace and definite renunciation. The result is enabling the attainment of good rebirths, and through a mind without regret, the experience of happiness in this life, bestowing the accomplishment of samadhi where the mind abides. The function is like the great earth being the support for all crops, becoming the basis and support for all virtuous Dharmas, and pacifying the suffering of afflictions, and the absence of fears such as evil deeds and harboring grudges in this life, and the absence of fears of the three lower realms in future lives, and so on. Possessing is possessing the accumulation of merit from abiding in the virtuous deeds of the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Entering or distinction is that receiving the Pratimoksha vows from the preceptor and instructor through the act of requesting and beseeching is the imputed precepts, and the two precepts of meditation and non-outflow are the precepts of attainment by nature. Thus, only those individuals who abide in the precepts as a basis have them, not others. Having fully understood such precepts, the wise will truly practice them. The nature of patience is to become the nature of three types of patience: patience that does not resent harm from sentient beings, patience that does not care about suffering, and patience that does not fear the meaning of profound Dharma. The cause is that because of compassion arising for sentient beings, one does not resent harm or become angry, and because of abiding in the precepts and relying on the Dharma that is heard, the other two types of patience arise. The result and benefits are explained as five: the absence of enemies because there is no fighting, the absence of discord because there are many friends, the happiness of body and mind in this life, dying happily at the time of death, and the five benefits of being reborn in a good realm after death. Patience is abiding in one's own happiness

Its function is that it benefits both oneself and others by not inflicting pain on others. Among all austerities, the most important and complete with all qualities is the meaning. As for patience, as explained earlier in the section on essence, it is considered to have three divisions. Having fully understood such patience, the wise will practice it correctly. The essence of diligence is to truly rejoice in virtuous Dharma, the cause is to have faith and belief in virtuous Dharma, relying on the desire to practice it, the result is that all qualities such as mindfulness increase more and more, the function is to completely act as an antidote to afflictions, and to be endowed with all pure qualities such as non-attachment. For these diligences, there are seven divisions: divided by object, there are three from the perspective of diligence in the three trainings; divided by essence, there are two diligences of body and mind; divided by application, there are two applications of respect and constancy, totaling seven. Alternatively, another classification is that the training of higher morality is the diligence of the body, the five mental events of diligence arising in the sphere of the five senses, and the two arising in the sphere of mind-consciousness, which are the training of higher mind and higher wisdom, are the diligence of the mind, which are also said to be seven types. Having fully understood such diligence, the wise will practice it correctly. The essence of meditation is that the mind is not distracted by external objects, but dwells inwardly, focused on one point, the cause is mindfulness that does not forget the object, relying on the diligence of constant practice, the result is great ease and bliss of body and mind, and the generation of happiness by being born in the upper realm of the form realm, free from the suffering of the desire realm, the function is to master the manifestation of supernormal powers and so on, and to master the dwelling of gods, Brahma, and noble beings. The dwelling of the gods is the four meditations and the four formless absorptions. The dwelling of Brahma is the four immeasurables. The three doors of liberation and so on are the dwelling of the noble ones. What is possessed is the possession of the primary qualities of white dharmas, that is, the attainment of special qualities by relying on obtaining mastery of the mind.
