Chapter Seventeen: The Perfection and Gathering Chapter Chapter Seventeen: The Perfection and Gathering Chapter Second, this chapter on the perfections and the objects of gathering explains the six perfections that perfect one's own Dharma of Buddhahood, and the four objects of gathering that ripen other sentient beings, and the three parts that summarize these two. The first part is briefly shown with a summary, and its meaning is explained in detail. Second of the second, the number and its characteristics are shown in one verse. If all the practices of the Great Vehicle Dharma are completely summarized, then they are included in these six perfections, so the basis of the path is limited to this. These six perfections themselves, in other situations such as gathering objects, offerings, reverence, and immeasurable aspects of enlightenment, become immeasurable Dharma doors in the form of different names and forms of practice. Therefore, first explain the Dharma characteristics of the six perfections. The number of the six perfections is fixed, and the individual characteristics of the perfections, and the order, and the meaning of the words of generosity, etc., and how to become familiar with the qualities of the perfections, and the distinctions among the six perfections, and the collection of all white dharmas into the six perfections, and the abandonment of the unfavorable aspects of the perfections, and the qualities of the perfections, and the mutual determination by the form in which others are also included in each of generosity, etc., and it should be known that it is explained through ten aspects. Second, among the ten aspects that are the same as the summary meaning, the first is to determine the number. The enjoyment and body, etc., are explained in six verses. Explaining the four reasons for determining the number, the first is to show the six perfections in order to achieve the qualities of higher status and definite goodness. Generosity makes enjoyment complete in lifetimes in samsara, morality makes the body of gods and humans complete, patience makes the retinue complete, and diligence makes the completion of work complete, these four are higher status. Samadhi tames one's own mind, constantly suppresses afflictions, and is not controlled by them. Wisdom makes what should be taken and abandoned universal and the four truths.

Furthermore, by understanding the discordant and amicable aspects of the perfections, it is certainly good to engage in the affairs of samsara and nirvana in a non-inverted manner. Therefore, these six should not be more or less, so they are determined to be six. Similarly, in order to accomplish the two benefits of oneself and others, they are determined to be six. First, with regard to one's own benefit, when a Bodhisattva diligently strives for the benefit of sentient beings, they benefit others by giving charity, and they do not harm others with morality by not killing others' lives, not stealing, etc. Even if others cause harm, they do not retaliate, but benefit others with patience. This is primarily and directly benefiting others. The place of liberation is meditation, such as when the mind is placed in equanimity, one will surely see the true meaning. What makes liberation itself is wisdom. What is called the basis is that the basis of these two is diligence, because by initiating diligence, the mind can be placed in equanimity and superior insight can be accomplished. These three are the way to practice all aspects of self-benefit. Thus, there are three that accomplish the benefit of others and three that accomplish the benefit of oneself, so they are determined to be six. Furthermore, since Bodhisattvas do not look to their own benefit but mainly practice benefiting others, they accomplish the benefit of others through the six perfections. By giving charity, they give the poor whatever they want, thereby ensuring that sentient beings do not lack resources. By morality, they do not harm sentient beings. By patience, they do not become angry and are able to endure when other sentient beings harm them. By diligence, they are not weary of benefiting others. By meditation, they reveal hidden things through clairvoyance and display miracles, making sentient beings yearn and rejoice. By wisdom, they speak well of the sacred Dharma. Therefore, in order to accomplish the benefit of others, accomplishing the benefit of others is what supremely accomplishes one's own benefit. Although one cannot attain great Bodhi by diligently striving only for one's own benefit, by striving to benefit others, one's own benefit will also be naturally accomplished temporarily, and ultimately one will attain unsurpassed Bodhi, so through the six perfections, the two benefits are naturally accomplished.
