arise. Third, the definite way in which all the actions of a Mahayana Bodhisattva are included in the six perfections is as follows: Not being delighted in the enjoyment of the five desirable qualities, whether external or internal objects, i.e., not being attached, and the giving of anything that is not given to others; being extremely respectful of the precepts of discipline, not being tainted by even the slightest offense; not being weary of the harm and hardship of sentient beings, is patience and diligence. Through patience, one endures all harm from sentient beings and various hardships; through diligence, one is not weary of doing the benefit of sentient beings and all extremely difficult endeavors for a long time, and engages in limitless diligence. Or, not being weary of accumulating the two accumulations of merit and wisdom is patience and diligence. Because patience abandons unfavorable factors, and diligence engages in antidotes. The supreme yoga of single-pointed concentration through meditation and the non-conceptualization of any characteristics through wisdom are calm abiding and special insight. If the meaning of all Mahayana is summarized, it is exhausted in these six perfections, and there is nothing that is not included in them. Fourth, from the perspective of the three higher trainings, the path of non-attachment to the objects of the five desirable qualities is generosity, which is to completely give away everything. Wanting to obtain the realm of desirable qualities, the path of restraining the mind from wandering is the perfection of discipline, which is different from the former. Because it prevents one from engaging in many activities that are distracted by worldly affairs. The path of not abandoning sentient beings even when they act wrongly and cause various harms is patience. The path of increasing the accumulation of virtue from higher to higher is diligence. Finally, meditation and wisdom are other paths for purifying obscurations, meditation mainly purifies afflictive obscurations, and wisdom mainly purifies cognitive obscurations. Or, meditation is the path of suppressing and subduing the two obscurations, and wisdom is the path of uprooting the two obscurations. Thus, the six paths that have been taught are from the perspective of the three trainings, and are the other shore of the Victorious Ones.

Just as the six perfections were just explained, they were truly expounded. What are they? First, generosity, discipline, and patience are the three trainings of higher discipline. The path of generosity without attachment is the cause of discipline, and its essence is the path of vows, discipline itself. The companion is the path of patience that does not abandon sentient beings. If one possesses these three, one can truly protect discipline. Finally, the two trainings are taught by the two, meditation and wisdom. Meditation is the training of higher mind, and wisdom is the training of higher wisdom itself. One, diligence, also belongs to all three trainings. Because those five perfections must be accomplished with diligence of respect and constancy, therefore diligence towards those perfections belongs to whichever of the three trainings it is. Thus, the number of six perfections is fixed. Second, the characteristics of the perfections are: each of the six, such as generosity, is shown by a verse each. Each one also has four characteristics. What are they? Generosity is the decline of miserliness, the opposite side, and the absence of miserliness is intention. The companion is to have non-discrimination in the three spheres, because one realizes the selflessness of persons and phenomena. Because the nature of the giver, the object of giving, and the receiver are not observed. The way of giving is to fulfill all the wishes of the receiver. The function of generosity is that, having gathered sentient beings with generosity, they mature in accordance with their respective dispositions on the paths of hearers, solitary realizers, and the Great Vehicle, and ultimately place them in the three fruits of those three in three ways. Thus, the four characteristics of generosity are the same. The opposite of discipline is the decline of immoral discipline, and the companion is possessed by non-discriminating wisdom. Therefore, the person who protects, the discipline, and the action of accomplishing it are not observed, and because there is no harm to other sentient beings by protecting discipline, their wishes are fulfilled, and by discipline, other sentient beings are pleased and gathered, and then they are placed in discipline, so that maturing in the three vehicles is three ways.
