Do not let it move to other places. Do not be distracted from the continuity of the previous object, but maintain continuity as much as possible through mindfulness. If even keeping it that way, it cannot stay for long and turns to other places, then quickly realize, "I am being distracted to other places," and then place the mind back on the previous object. By practicing like this repeatedly, by maintaining continuity, if it is possible to maintain continuity even a little, then the wise one should strive very hard, more and more upwards. Gathering the mind inwards onto the previous object of thought is called near placement. Then, when the mind is able to abide a little more than before, in order to see for oneself the merits of the mind abiding, how wonderful it would be if I could attain the samadhi of mind abiding, like this, by liking samadhi and pursuing it, tame one's own mind. That is to say, the mind that has not been tamed by distracting thoughts is tamed by liking samadhi. By liking samadhi and pursuing it like this, even if the mind is placed on the object as much as possible, due to the force of previous habits of distraction, if it becomes distracted, then this distraction, like a robber who steals samadhi, will cause great harm. Because of seeing the faults of distraction, do not be dominated by it, but strive for samadhi, the root of all merits. Through the cause of distraction, pacify the dislike for that samadhi, this is called the sixth abiding mind - pacification. By striving like this, even if the mind abides much better than before, sometimes greed and displeasure, etc., and near afflictions such as lethargy and agitation arise, if one is dominated by these as before, then samadhi cannot be accomplished, which is a great fault. If one is not dominated, then samadhi, which is the basis for special qualities such as clairvoyance, can be accomplished, so in any case, do not pay attention to these evil thoughts, like this, by separately examining greed, etc., or showing antidotes, or thinking of nothing, pacify them, this is called near pacification. Then, for those who diligently guard their vows, through effort, the eighth abiding mind associated with manifest mental activity through habituation

Having obtained spontaneously through effort, and striving while relying on exertion, without being hindered by other distractions, remaining on the object is called having effort. By continuously familiarizing oneself with that state of mind with effort, without needing to strive with effort, the mind naturally remains on the object and spontaneously accomplishes, obtaining non-effort, this is the last of the nine states of mind, called one-pointedness of mind that is in accordance with samadhi. The nine methods of abiding in the mind are: As the Sutra says: placing, rightly placing, gathering and placing, closely placing, taming, pacifying, closely pacifying, single-pointedness, samadhi or equal placing. Having obtained the mind that abides naturally without effort, if one becomes accustomed to that state, then the yogi's body becomes extremely pliable and workable, and the mind obtains extreme pliancy. The body becomes spacious and capable of cultivating virtue in a very comfortable manner, and the mind becomes clear, pure, and free from defilements, filled with joy, and capable of focusing on virtuous objects, obtaining small and medium pliancy. Having obtained great pliancy that is extremely thin and clear like a shadow, it should be known that this is the mental activity with the characteristics of serenity and coarseness that obtains the first dhyana. Through that mental activity, by gradually abandoning the three types of afflictions of the desire realm, large, medium, and small, that samadhi is increased. Because that increase goes far beyond the lower grounds, the yogi thereby obtains the actual abiding of the first dhyana. Similarly, it should be known that from above to above, through mental activities with the characteristics of serenity and coarseness, one cultivates up to the actual abiding of the fourth dhyana. Up to this point, the method of cultivating samadhi has been explained. From here onwards, the qualities of obtaining samadhi are shown. When one obtains the actual abiding of the four dhyanas, because one seeks higher knowledge, obtaining the actual abiding of dhyana, because the afflictions of one's own realm, attachment, views, and doubt, are greater, by purifying the impure, one becomes supremely capable, and the miraculous powers obtained from the capable and pure dhyana
