It is called 'with expression' because the cause of the arising of speech is investigation and analysis, hence it is 'with expression.' The actual practice of the first dhyana, which is unique, 'without investigation but with analysis,' also belongs to the former category. The samadhi of the actual practice from the second dhyana onwards is free from both investigation and analysis, hence it is called 'without expression.' In the 'Commentary on the Steadfast Mind,' it is said that the preliminary stage and the first dhyana are with investigation and analysis, the second dhyana and the intermediate dhyanas are without investigation but with analysis, and the third and fourth dhyanas are samadhi without investigation or analysis. The seventh, the mental engagement endowed with knowledge, is indicated by 'It is associated with consciousness, with the cause of yoga and self.' In the 'Commentary on the Steadfast Mind,' it says, 'It is truly endowed with wisdom, it is the nature of the cause of yoga.' This also refers to the wisdom or consciousness arising from meditation, being associated or truly associated with it, which is called consciousness mental engagement. This consciousness itself is the nature of yoga or shamatha-vipashyana, and its cause is the nature or self of the wisdom of hearing and thinking. In short, the yoga of shamatha-vipashyana meditation arising from the cause of immaculate hearing and thinking is the mental engagement endowed with knowledge. The eighth, the mental engagement that focuses on mixture, is indicated by 'That is focused on mixture, and below are five aspects.' There are five aspects of focusing on mixture: focusing on mixture in the sutras, focusing on mixture in the verses of special statements or summaries, focusing on mixture in the topic, focusing on mixture in grasping, and focusing on mixture in explanation. The first of the five, such as the 'Ten Bhumi Sutra' and others, generally engage the mind by summarizing the meaning of the teachings, and summarize the meaning of each chapter by including it in the meaning, and focus on it in that way. They also focus on it by summarizing the essence in the form of general principles, such as the topic and the conclusion of the text, and by summarizing the meaning of what one has grasped, saying, 'This is just about it,' and by summarizing it similarly when explaining it to others. In short, the meaning of the sutras, and the verses of special statements or summaries of meaning in between, and the topic are summarized and engaged in the mind.

Moreover, the meaning of teaching and learning should also be summarized and kept in mind in the same way. If all the teachings of the Mahayana sutras are summarized, they are profound and vast. If the profound meaning is summarized, it is like summarizing the grasper and the grasped, self and other, etc., into suchness, which is free from the elaboration of the two dharmas. Although it is explained extensively in various ways, it is important to know that it ultimately leads to this. If all the vast dharmas are summarized, they are summarized into the three: ground, path, and fruition. The ground is summarized into the two truths, the path is summarized into the two accumulations, and the fruition is summarized into the two kayas, etc., focusing on what is summarized and mixed. Ninth, focusing on what is distinct or unmixed. As it says, "Focusing on what is unmixed." Subsequently, it is shown by "seven aspects." There are seven aspects to focusing on what is unmixed. Focusing on name, such as pillar and vase. Focusing on words, such as long pillar, new vase, etc., showing the name and its distinction combined. Focusing on letters, that is, focusing on the root of all names, the letters such as A (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: A) and Ka (Tibetan: ཀ, Sanskrit Devanagari: क, Sanskrit Romanization: ka, Chinese literal meaning: Ka). These three are divided into three aspects from the expressive point of view, and then it is focused on, saying that whatever sutra has so many words, names, and letters, it shows this meaning. All the treatises of the world and beyond do not go beyond the nature of names, words, and letters. Although they show meaning, it is because of the interpretation of the mind, so it is important to know that all names, words, and letters also arise from the mind and are merely established by the mind, thereby entering into the unspeakable. If it is from the point of view of the expressible, then from the point of view of the perfectly established, focusing on the absence of self of the person and the absence of self of the dharma, the two. From the point of view of the other-dependent, focusing on the other-dependent form dharmas that appear as the grasped, that is, the manifold and impermanent, the body is impure, and is the basis of suffering. Focusing on the other-dependent non-form dharmas that appear as the grasper, that is, the mind and mental factors are suffering and impermanent. Tenth, the ascertainment of complete knowledge, keeping in mind. It is shown by "Five complete knowledges of this." The complete knowledge of the focus of this samadhi is five. What are the five? That is, the basis to be completely known, the four truths. The meaning to be completely known, impermanence, etc.
