Chapter Twelve: The Chapter on Thoroughly Searching for the Dharma Chapter Twelve: The Chapter on Thoroughly Searching for the Dharma Having explained the Chapter on Faith and Understanding in this way, it is not enough to merely have faith and understanding. One must thoroughly search for the profound and vast Dharma of the Great Vehicle, in which one has faith, through the wisdom of hearing, contemplating, and meditating. One must accumulate much learning and gain certainty in its meaning. Therefore, this chapter on searching for the Dharma is explained. There are five parts to this: the Dharma to be searched for, what kind of attention to use to search, the distinctions of thoroughly searching, the result of searching for the Dharma, and verses summarizing the meaning. The first part has two divisions: searching for the Dharma of the scriptures to be explained, and searching for the Dharma of realization to be realized. The first of these has three divisions: thoroughly searching for the object of focus, the scriptures themselves; thoroughly searching for the attainment of the object of focus, the meaning they reveal; and thoroughly searching for the attention of the searcher. The first of these, in order to show what the object of focus is for the three wisdoms, the four verses beginning with "The collections of discourses..." are spoken. Here, the object of focus is the Dharma of the Buddha's scriptures, the collections of discourses. The term "Pitaka" (Tibetan: བི་ཊཀ་) refers to the collections of discourses, and it is so named because it contains many objects of knowledge. Similarly, the large bre of U-Tsang (Central Tibet) also has this name because it contains many small bre and can hold them. Here too, the collections of discourses contain many objects of expression and knowledge. The divisions of the collections of discourses are the collection of discourses (Sutra Pitaka), the collection of discipline (Vinaya Pitaka), and the collection of higher knowledge (Abhidhamma Pitaka), or they can be summarized into two: the collection of discourses of the Great Vehicle Bodhisattvas and the collection of discourses of the Small Vehicle Hearers. The definition of the collections of discourses is that many meanings are contained within them, as explained above. The scriptures are extensively divided into twelve branches, as in: "Sutras, songs, and prophecies, verses, self-utterances, and causes, parables, accounts, and birth stories, extensive [texts], marvels, and established [principles]." Among these, the extensive texts are vast and profound, the birth stories are the collections of discourses of the Bodhisattvas, and most of the rest are common to both Hearers and the Great Vehicle. There are also many that belong to the collections of discourses of the Hearers. These twelve, when summarized, are the three collections.
