Thus it is. The reason for establishing the three pitakas is considered to be ninefold. That is, from the aspect of what is to be abandoned, there are three, from the aspect of what is to be learned, there are three, and from the aspect of what is to be known, there are three. The first of these is through the means of eliminating the three afflictions, that is, the antidote to the affliction of doubt about the dharmas such as aggregates, realms, and sources is the teaching of the sutra pitaka. For those who doubt the meaning of the self-characteristics and general characteristics of aggregates, realms, sources, dependent origination, truths, grounds, and perfections, not knowing what they are or what state they are in, it is shown to them that these things are like this and like that, so that they know without doubt and as they are, and therefore doubt is eliminated. The vinaya is the antidote to the afflictions that closely follow the two extremes of desire for gain and hardship and fatigue. In order to prevent the enjoyment of various inappropriate resources due to attachment to desire, like the behavior of householders, worldly bad behaviors are prohibited, that is, any behavior that leads to defeat, residue, downfall, and misdeeds is not allowed. The alms bowl and dharma robes, etc., which are the means of sustaining one's own life and are without fault, are allowed. In order to counteract the severe asceticism like that of the heretics, such as sleeping in ashes and thorns, being naked, fasting, and performing the asceticism of dogs and cows, etc., which makes one's body tired and painful, all the resources for sustaining the body that are without sin are allowed to all the renunciants in common. Monks who have discipline and virtue are allowed to enjoy food with a hundred flavors, clothes worth a hundred thousand, and beautiful houses with many windows. Although they have these good enjoyments, if they do not have attachment and arrogance, then enjoying them is without fault. Even if one lives with coarse food and tattered clothes, if one has attachment and arrogance, then that is an inappropriate enjoyment. Therefore, in order to abandon inappropriate resources and enjoy appropriate resources, it is the antidote to eliminating the two extremes. The abhidharma pitaka is the antidote to the arrogance of self-view.

If one becomes arrogant from hearing only a little and becomes immoral, then not seeking to hear much from a virtuous friend is called conceit of view. Because in the Abhidharma, the characteristics of the self and common nature of dharmas are truly determined, hearing it will abandon various conceits and views that hold views and morality in reverse. Furthermore, from the perspective of learning, the higher training in morality is the complete Pratimoksha vows in common, or the Mahayana vows of abstaining from misconduct, accumulating virtuous dharmas, and benefiting sentient beings. The higher training in mind is the eight Samadhi of the Form and Formless Realms in common, and the Samadhi of the Bodhisattva's heroic conduct, etc., which are uncommon. The higher training in wisdom is the Four Noble Truths in common, and the non-conceptual wisdom of the Mahayana, which is uncommon. The Sutras teach all three trainings. The Vinaya teaches the training of morality and Samadhi, because if one practices as it says in the Vinaya, having morality will not have regret, etc., and gradually attain Samadhi. The Abhidharma determines the self and common characteristics of dharmas without error, therefore, wisdom that truly knows the nature of dharmas will arise. Furthermore, from the perspective of the object of knowledge, the Sutras explain Dharma and meaning, so-called Dharma refers to the two expressed by name and meaning, or explaining the aggregates, realms, and sources, etc., is Dharma, and the four intentions are meaning. Or, the ten virtues that attain higher realms are Dharma, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, etc., that attain Nirvana are meaning, these are what the Sutras say. The Vinaya accomplishes Dharma and meaning, diligently subduing afflictions, one can manifest or practice these two. The Abhidharma truly explains and very clearly determines Dharma and meaning, thereby making one wise. So, what is the need to seek these three pitakas of Dharma? Completely seeking and practicing with three wisdoms, hearing can plant the habit of the path of liberation in one's own mind, and thinking can obtain a definite understanding of the meaning.
