It is desired to do so. According to the first view, the so-called "mind," including the eight consciousnesses such as the Alaya-consciousness and the mental factors arising from the mind, appears as the dualistic grasping and grasped, that is, there is no external object as the grasped other than the mind. According to the latter view, the nature of mind itself merely appears as the dualistic grasping and grasped, and apart from that, there are no mental factors arising from the mind and no grasping and grasped. These two ways of explaining mentioned in the 'Blo brtan 'grel pa' (Commentary on the Steadfast Mind), according to the first view, are the school that believes that mind and mental factors are different entities; according to the second view, it is clearly stated that it is the school that believes they are not different entities. Similarly, the mind is considered to appear as afflictive emotions such as desire and hatred, or as faith and diligence, etc., but there are no other afflictive emotions and virtuous dharmas other than the mind. Therefore, the mind, that is, the Alaya-consciousness itself, appears as various objects of grasping, and enters into various aspects of grasping. And the grasping and grasped that appear in the mind in this way are merely appearances, and in reality, they are not established as they appear. Therefore, since there is no nature of various dharmas different from the mind, all dharmas are merely appearances of the mind, and therefore are established as mind-only. Sixth, completely seeking the characteristics: The Buddhas, in order to benefit sentient beings, through generating wisdom that is not confused about the nature of knowable objects, in order to benefit sentient beings, correctly explain by means of the basis, characteristics, signified object, and classification. What is that? The basis to be signified by these three characteristics, that is, the nature or self-nature of each, is limited to these five bases of knowable objects: the basis of form, the basis of the primary mind, the basis of the retinue mental factors, the basis of non-associated compositional factors, and the basis of unconditioned phenomena. The basis of form is the five sense faculties and the five objects, that is, the ten form aggregates. The basis of mind is the eight aggregates of consciousness. The basis of mental factors is the fifty-one mental factors. Non-associated compositional factors are like the explanation of twenty-three such as attainment and non-attainment. Unconditioned phenomena are cessation through discrimination, cessation not through discrimination, space, and the four suchnesses.

O! So, "the mind is" indicates the basis of the mind. "Having observation" indicates that when the mind observes an object, the three of object, faculty, and attention must be complete, so it indicates mental factors, the five faculties, and the five objects. Because the appearance of the object is attended to in the mind, it indicates the basis of mental factors. The five faculties and the five objects, namely the five of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, these ten indicate the basis of form. Its state indicates the state of mind, mental factors, and form. For what is obtained and not obtained, common destiny, life force, and individuals, etc., which are nominally neither material nor conscious, belong to the category of conditioned phenomena, indicating the basis of non-associated compositional factors. "Unchanging" indicates that it is not created by causes and conditions, so it is free from the three of arising, abiding, and ceasing, so its nature will never change, indicating the basis of the unconditioned, these five bases are, in short, the characteristic base. Since there are no knowable phenomena that are not included in this, there are three characteristics. It is considered to be the characteristic base to be established. In the commentary of Blo brtan, "the mind is" indicates the five faculties and five objects that appear to be grasped by the mind, and the six consciousnesses that appear to be apprehended. "Having observation" indicates mental factors, etc., which seems to explain the meaning of entering the object with the nature of clarity and fluctuation. Sometimes the characteristic base is also called the signified, because it is to be represented by the three characteristics, so the two can be considered to have the same meaning. If the internal classification of these is used to distinguish the characteristic bases, there are countless, because each one has countless differences, namely the mental continuum of sentient beings such as mind and form, and various distinctions such as time and place, so it will become limitless like the number of knowables. The nature of these five characteristic bases is, in short, of three kinds, namely, the completely imputed, the other-powered, and the thoroughly established. These three are established as three natures or self-natures from the part of the phenomena that appears as dualistic, the cause of the appearance, and the part where the dualistic is not established. What are they? First, the nature of the completely imputed is that, although there is no external object, the conceptual appearance spoken of by names such as pillars and vases, recognizing that it is that meaning, and then for "this is a pillar, this is a vase," etc., clinging to the cause of the cognition established in meaning, thereby generating the completely imputed, namely the name and the sign of
