Conceptual thoughts of consciousness arise, repeatedly being born and ceasing in samsara. Thus, even in the state of dualistic appearance, the substance of the apprehended and the apprehender is completely abandoned, because those two are not inherently different entities. However, due to the confusion of the mind, they appear as two and are fixated upon as two. Knowing that samsara is accomplished by this is seeking the nature of affliction. Seeking the nature of purification is when a person who has attained the distinction of focusing on the Dharma in the stage of faith, as explained above, abides in the self-nature of the other-dependent mind or abides in the reality of the Dharmadhatu, possesses the first ground, realizes that as the grounds of the path of meditation, and for the sake of meditating on the yoga of calm abiding and insight that possesses that, that very suchness, without appearing as the duality of the apprehended and the apprehender, progresses from higher to higher, up to the state of Buddhahood. For example, the minds of sentient beings, because they appear as the apprehender and the apprehended and are tainted by the delusion of fixation, are unable to manifest the liberation from the afflictions of the mind and the liberation from the ignorance of wisdom. Bodhisattvas, on the other hand, realize the absence of the apprehender and the apprehended, and through the power of calm abiding and insight that is equipoised on that meaning, they manifest those two liberations. For example, that mind, like a stiff and rigid leather tainted by alcohol and the like, is softened and made pliable by calm abiding like water and oil. Like an arrow that has been twisted by wrong views such as the view of self and the views of permanence and annihilation, making the mind discordant with reality, it is heated and straightened by insight like fire. Thus, by correcting the mind with the inverted path, making it non-inverted, ultimately in the state of Buddhahood, one obtains the liberation of mind and the liberation of wisdom, which will never decline. Fifth, the complete search for mere consciousness. The verses "The mind appears as dualistic," etc., show that what is called "mere consciousness" is merely mind and mental factors, and there is no external object. Those who assert this, with the word "mere," negate form but do not negate mental factors. Some Mind-Only proponents negate both mental factors and form, in addition to Mind-Only. There are these two schools, so in this case, both of them...
