If, as it is believed, the appearance of external objects is the cause of illusion, then the nature of illusion is considered to be formless consciousness, that is, the six consciousnesses such as eye consciousness each grasp the grasper and the grasped. Although it is illusory as two, since there is no grasped that is separate from the grasper, the grasping of the other does not exist either, because the two are established in dependence on each other, and if one does not exist, the other does not exist either. In reality, both the grasper and the grasped are empty. If this is the case, the tangible faculties such as the eye do not exist, and if objects such as form do not exist, then the root consciousnesses have no cause and should not arise, but the appearance of the grasper and the grasped is undeniable, how is this reasonable? Although the grasper and the grasped do not exist as two, it is reasonable that they appear as two, which can be proven by the analogy that is prevalent in the world and the analogy that appears in the scriptures. First, seeing the image of an illusory elephant and grasping it by understanding its form, this is because the meaningless appearance is an illusion. The nature of illusion is that the grasped is the image of an elephant, and the consciousness that grasps it is called the two. For this, the grasper and the grasped are like the grasper and the grasped, although the two do not exist, it is only that the mind of illusion regards the two as the grasper and the grasped, which exists in the world. If we consider it from the perspective of the analogy that appears in the scriptures, the yogis who are accustomed to ugliness achieve clear appearance, because the skeleton does not actually exist, so it is an illusion, it is only said to be the grasper and the grasped. For the consciousness that grasps the appearance of the skeleton, although there is no grasper and grasped as it appears, the mind that regards the two as the grasper and the grasped arises, just like this. Just like these analogies, on the other-dependent consciousness, the appearances of defiled and purified dharmas, although they are not established as the grasper and the grasped, it is only that they appear as two, from this point of view, the inconsistent aspects, that is, all the dharmas of the characteristic of the illusion of defilement, and all that is included by karma and afflictive maturation, are also just like the analogy just mentioned, they only exist in the appearance of illusion, and do not exist like the imputation of children, therefore, there is no difference between existence and non-existence, or it is because there is no contradiction.

Ra. Merely appearing but not existing in reality is similar to illusion. The Dharma spoken of in the Sutras, such as mindfulness and Paramitas, the path, and the powers, the resultant Dharma, which is the antidote, all of these are also considered by children as the two, the grasper and the grasped, but they do not exist in that way. They exist only as they appear. Although they appear, they do not exist as they appear, therefore they have no self-nature or essence, and thus they are shown to be similar to illusion. In the Prajnaparamita, it is said that all Dharmas are like illusions and dreams. Nirvana is also like illusions and dreams. If it is said that the side of all afflictions is like illusion, and the side of purification is also like illusion, then how does the side of purification, which is like illusion, abandon the side of affliction, which is like illusion? Just as a king of illusion who knows illusion, who is weak and has retinue, is defeated and driven out of his place by another king of illusion who is powerful and has retinue, so on the Alaya-vijnana, which is like the place of a king, the mind of affliction such as the view of self abides, like a weak king of illusion. His retinue, the mental factors, are like the retinue of the king. Until the antidote arises, all afflicted Dharmas control all arising, like a king. From that, the king of illusion who is more powerful than that, the wisdom that realizes selflessness and the nature of virtue such as faith, the pure mind and its retinue of mental factors, completely uproot the side of affliction, and transform the Alaya-vijnana into the state of a king who completely controls the unpolluted Dharmas. Therefore, whoever sees all pure Dharmas as appearances empty of the grasper and the grasped, like princes of illusion, they have abandoned affliction and generated purity, but they have no arrogance of having done this. Now, explaining the meaning of the Buddha's saying that all Dharmas are similar to the eight similes of illusion. Whichever Buddha, the supreme one who is fully enlightened or truly knows, that is, those who are superior to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, in the translation of the "Commentary of Stable Intellect" is "Intellect.
