Stones and branches, etc., do not have horses and cows, etc. Likewise, the nature of phenomena that is originally without the duality of grasper and grasped is the ultimate truth or reality, that is, the non-inverted nature of all phenomena, and is therefore considered to be the perfectly established. Just as illusory objects appear as horses and cows, etc. through the power of mantras, so all appearances of grasper and grasped are considered to be conventional truths. If the illusory appearances of horses and cows, etc., which are deluded by illusory mantras, do not exist, then how can the causes of their appearance, such as stones and branches, etc., be clearly perceived? Similarly, when the habitual tendencies of grasper and grasped are abandoned and the nature of the alaya consciousness is transformed, just as there is no appearance of horses and cows, the perfectly established reality in which grasper and grasped do not appear is realized only through the wisdom of meditative equipoise. The wisdom gained after that is like seeing stones and branches directly. The cause of the appearance of grasper and grasped, which is the unreal conceptualization, is merely dependent on others, and thus one realizes that the three realms are only mind. Just as ordinary people who are not deluded by illusory objects and mantras do not see illusory horses and cows, etc., but only recognize their causes, such as stones and branches, and thus act as they please without being deluded, so those who have gained the path of antidote to delusion, the diligent ones who are not deluded, the deluded appearances of grasper and grasped have been transformed, and thus they enjoy the pure dependent nature as they please, which means that like seeing an illusion, there is no attachment or fear, etc., and thus they act freely. The illusory horses and cows, etc., are merely appearances of forms, like the causes, such as stones and branches, but the real self-character of horses and cows, etc., does not exist at all. Therefore, for illusions, dreams, etc., because there is only appearance, one cannot say that they do not exist, but one says that they do not exist as they appear, and therefore one cannot say that they exist either. If one thinks that it is impossible for phenomena to be both existent and non-existent, or neither existent nor non-existent, and that one must admit one of them in any case, then the appearance in illusion is merely an appearance, which is not non-existent, because if it did not appear, it would not appear as horses and cows, etc., and it could not be established as false, because there is no basis. The appearance and its objects do not exist.

Intrinsic nature never exists; if it did, it wouldn't be false, just like real horses and cows. Therefore, for the appearances of illusions, etc., the presence and absence of both are expressed as being without distinction or contradiction on the same basis, that is, the union of appearance and emptiness. Similarly, merely appearing as duality exists in other-powered nature, but its entity, established as dual as it appears, does not exist. Thus, for external forms, sounds, etc., it is said that only appearance exists, and that being established as it appears does not exist. Why? Because the mere appearance that exists there is not non-existent, and the meaning as it appears, that is, being established as form, etc., does not exist; it is not established as ever existing, just like the appearance of two moons. Therefore, for forms, etc., without falling into either side of the presence or absence mentioned above, both are gathered without distinction, and it is expressed like the example of an illusion. In this way, although there is mere appearance without distinction between existence and non-existence, it is shown that it does not exist as it appears, which is the Middle Way, to refute the extremes of imputing existence to the totally fabricated and denying the basis of appearance, other-powered nature. As it is said in the Differentiation of the Middle and the Extremes: "The untrue totally fabricated exists; in it, both are not." and so on, and this is the Middle Way. As it is said. If one understands in this way, then the phenomena of grasper and grasped appear but are without inherent existence, knowing them to be like illusions, one will not fear samsara and will not be attached to nirvana. Therefore, in order to prevent those who, fearing the suffering of samsara, quickly seek the peace of nirvana, the Hinayana practitioners who go to peace, from entering the extreme of peace, it is asserted in this way, in a manner that is free from the two extremes. Although grasper and grasped are non-dual, the cause of confusion into duality, and the confusion, are considered to be the consciousness in the form of form and the consciousness in the form of non-form. The cause of confusion is the consciousness that appears in the form of the five senses and the five objects, which appear as if they are different from the mind. For example, in a dream, the forms of horses, cows, women, etc., that appear in the realm of one's own senses, are one's own consciousness appearing as the grasped, but without knowing this, one considers them to be grasped that are different from the knower.
