What are the three? They are the ultimate benefit for oneself, and for the sake of benefiting others, introducing sentient beings to the sacred Dharma, such as the Sutra Pitaka and the twelve branches, and thoroughly subduing them with that method, which is to teach in accordance with their disposition, power, and thoughts, thereby enabling the mindstream to be liberated, the unobstructed wisdom is wisdom. The transcendence of loving-kindness, which never abandons all beings, is great compassion. From these two arises the ultimate benefit for others. Because of possessing the qualities of the ultimate benefit for both oneself and others, therefore, the Buddha himself is considered the supreme refuge in this world. The reason for being a great refuge is that in the realms of the world encompassed by direction and time, as long as there are sentient beings, it can avert all harm and bring about their permanent pacification, and possesses the power to accomplish all the perfections of the world and beyond. Therefore, the Buddha is considered a great refuge. Fourth, regarding the qualities of transformation of the basis. There are two aspects: the explanation of the transformation of the basis itself, and the demonstration of its superiority. First, for what stream of consciousness are the habitual tendencies or seeds of the afflictive obscurations and the obscurations of knowledge ceased? For those that have never been separated from beginningless samsara for a long time, and are always continuously present, from the first bhumi to the tenth bhumi, the transcendental noble wisdom that arises from the great cause of the two accumulations, and is non-conceptual, equal to space, and extremely vast, each of which has nine such as the great of great wisdom, therefore possessing the nature of all kinds, or in other words, completely destroying or abandoning with all such kinds. The object, the five aggregates, are transformed into the nature of the extremely pure realm of Dharma, and the subject, knowledge, is transformed into the nature of non-conceptual wisdom, or in other words, the emptiness of all phenomena, which is the pure suchness, the realm of Dharma, and the eight consciousnesses are transformed into the four wisdoms, these five are called transformation of the basis. In short, all impure appearances, such as the vessel that appears as a place, the eight aggregates of consciousness that appear as meaning, and the body that appears as form, are originally and naturally abiding in suchness, but because they are obscured by the two obscurations, therefore their nature

Having abandoned (wrong views) through the path because of not seeing reality as it is, the limitless and vast appearance that is distinguished by complete purity is called transformation of the basis. If it is in terms of reality, the two, grasper and grasped, are without inherent existence, abiding in equanimity without wavering. If it is in terms of all that exists, although all knowable things appear like illusions without being mixed, there is no mark of distinction, it is equality. Such a transformation of the basis is the essence of the qualities of the stainless white Dharma, possessing the supreme qualities such as strength and fearlessness that are not present in Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and attaining it is called Buddhahood. This is the state where, in the equipoise of Bodhisattvas, with utterly pure or extremely pure non-conceptualization, all phenomena are realized without any object of focus, like the face of the sky. And in the post-meditation state, although limitless knowable things appear, the wisdom of the extremely vast realm that sees them as illusions, or the wisdom of the pure mundane realm, these two are attained through the path of cultivation. At the time of Buddhahood, there is no difference between equipoise and post-meditation, but with self-arisen or inconceivable great wisdom, all phenomena of reality and all that exists are seen simultaneously. The second part explains in two points how the transformation of the basis of the Buddhas surpasses the transformation of the basis of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and its ten divisions. Firstly, the Tathagata Buddha, having fully understood or gone to the way the realm of Dharma abides, abides in that stainless realm of transformation of the basis. For example, just as the king of mountains, Mount Meru, is high from all directions, and looking from its top in the ten directions, one sees all the good and bad forms, near and far. Similarly, the Tathagata, surpassing the transformation of the basis of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, abides on the top of the high mountain of the complete transformation of the basis of the Buddhas, and with great compassion, gazes upon all beings. He also has great compassion for the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who rejoice in the peace of Nirvana for their own benefit. Because these Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not benefited beings who have been relatives since beginningless samsara, have abandoned great compassion, and lack the great wisdom of realizing the selflessness of phenomena, they have not been able to abandon the obscurations to knowledge, and therefore have not attained omniscience.
