Eliminating Extremes. The realization of selflessness is not merely an emptiness of complete non-existence in every way. Rather, it is the perfect reality, empty of the two graspers, like an illusion, known to be equal and inseparable from suchness. This is the elimination of the extreme of denying annihilation. Having understood the Middle Way in this way, that Bodhisattva enters that reality through the gate of mind-only, holding onto that path in that way, and repeatedly familiarizes himself with it through his mind. This is the contemplation of suchness through the gate of mind-only, from the stage of warmth to the stage of forbearance. Then, because the mind abides in the understanding of mind-only, even though the apprehended appears, one realizes that the nature of the apprehended is empty. Similarly, even though the apprehender appears through mind-only, one realizes that the apprehender itself is also empty like the apprehended. Having attained the samadhi of the highest worldly dharma, that apprehender also does not appear. Seeing that both the apprehended and the apprehender are equally unestablished in that place, the elaboration of the apprehended and the apprehender does not appear in any way. This is liberation from all conceptual thoughts, the perfect reality that is the supreme wisdom of the noble ones, free from all objects of focus and without inversion. Furthermore, another aspect of liberation is shown: In the past, having the basis of accumulating the two accumulations in one countless eon, and in this life, having the basis of accumulating the three practices of hearing, thinking, and meditating on the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, and if there are the two grounds for cultivating faith and practice, properly contemplating impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, then from that cause, at the time of attaining the heat and peak of the path of application, all phenomena are seen as merely labeled by mind with names, without any intrinsic characteristics, and only as conceptual thoughts. Thus, since there are no phenomena to be labeled, the aggregates of name and form, which are merely labeled by pervasive conceptualization, are only mind and mental factors, and there is no external meaning. This is known at the time of attaining the forbearance of the path of application, seeing the forbearance that is devoid of external meaning. The clinging to mere name or mind-only is not seen later, at the time of the highest worldly dharma. Thus, since the two graspers are not seen, appearance arises like a mirror, and finally, liberation is attained by attaining the equality of the Buddha's ground. Again, liberation.

Showing other categories of liberation. The so-called "mind" refers to the mind, such as the alaya consciousness, and the dharmas that arise from the mind. This mind is accompanied by evil abodes, namely, the evil abodes of the body, such as killing, and other unwholesome deeds, and the evil abodes of the mind, such as attachment, aversion, and ignorance. Or, they are the two evil abodes of the habitual tendencies of the afflictive and cognitive obscurations. The cause of the evil abodes is the clinging to the self of persons and the clinging to the self of phenomena. When the noose of self-clinging tightly seizes the mind, one will deeply enter into samsara. In short, as long as the mind associated with the evil abodes, which accumulates afflictive and cognitive obscurations through the two self-grasps, is not abandoned, it will accumulate habitual tendencies in the mind and enter into samsara. The saying, "This mind abides within and desires to return," how does this mind abide within? The mind that clings to objects and is distracted, gathers the mind inward and abides authentically within in calm abiding, and realizes the mere mind that grasps without objects, and realizes that there is no mind, thereby separating from the grasper and the grasped, one will not accumulate the habitual tendencies of evil abodes, and the mind will return from entering into samsara, thereby attaining liberation. These four categories of liberation that are spoken of, merely show liberation from other categories. Although the 'Commentary of the Wise' does not speak of other meanings, the first category explains the nature of liberation from the perspective of the transformation of the abode, the second explains it from the perspective of the path of liberation, the third explains it from the perspective of the order in which liberation arises, and the fourth is that whether one is liberated or not depends on the mind. If bound, the mind is bound; if liberated, the mind is liberated. It is not like the outsiders who believe that liberation is attained through the control of Ishvara, nor is it like the naked ascetics who believe that liberation is transformed into a corporeal form. These are not reasonable. Because without abandoning the bondage of the mind, it is never possible to attain liberation. If one abandons the bondage of the two self-grasps, that is liberation. These four categories of liberation are a complete search for liberation. The eighth is the complete search for no self-nature, which is shown by the two verses, "Self and the nature of self," etc. In the sutras, it is said that all phenomena are without self-nature.
