The object of meditation is called the "base." The initial cause or symbol for entering the Dharma is the base from which future yogic grounds arise. Therefore, focusing on the meaning of the scriptures, "proper attention" refers to the base of establishing or generating. In the path of application, through the experience of meditation with proper attention, at the stage of warmth, phenomena cannot be expressed in words; at the peak stage, the meanings of phenomena are understood as illusory; at the stage of acceptance, there is no grasping; at the stage of supreme Dharma, one realizes non-attachment, and gradually the knowledge of suchness becomes better and clearer, which is called the base of generation, for the sake of generating the path of seeing. Alternatively, because importance is given to proper attention, it is also called establishment, because it leaves the habit of realizing supramundane Dharma in the mind. "Like a mirror, abiding in the essence of the mind," this indicates that the essence of the other-dependent mind is the suchness of the two emptinesses. Therefore, manifestly abiding in this is at the time of the first ground of the path of seeing. Just as images appear clearly in a mirror, that wisdom manifestly sees all knowable things as the nature of suchness. Some people think that like a mirror, it refers to abiding in the realization of emptiness in a general way from the great accumulation path to the supreme Dharma, but in the commentary of Blo brtan, it is more appropriate to explain it on the first ground. "Appearance is seeing what exists and what does not exist," this indicates that the supramundane wisdom from the second to the tenth grounds sees what exists as existing and what does not exist as non-existent. This is the unperverted appearance of the nature of things, so it is called appearance. What exists refers to the other-dependent, conventional nature, and the perfectly established, ultimate nature. These two are seen as existing as they are. The completely imputed is grasped by deluded thought, so it is seen as non-existent like a rabbit's horn. The place or support is, there it transforms into equality, etc., indicated by a single verse. In the ultimate Buddha ground, all dharmas transform into equality, because of the stainless

All Buddhas who have entered into the sphere of reality, their body, speech, and mind have become equal, and all phenomena are likewise comprehended as one taste in the essence of great equality. That is to say, the very nature of all phenomena, the self-nature of the pure realm of phenomena, is called the noble lineage, and it is also called the Sugata-garbha and the ultimate truth. That realm, being free from the stains of the two obscurations, has been transformed into an extremely stainless state, and since the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas only have the liberation of abandoning the afflictive obscurations, they are equal only in that respect. They are superior to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas by five distinctions. Since all afflictions have ceased, the realm of phenomena does not diminish. Since the complete purification increases, the realm of phenomena does not increase. It is always equal without increase or decrease, and it does not move from equality. It is called peace or support. Liberation is that which goes everywhere as a support, so the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are also liberated from Samsara, so such liberation is also present in the Buddhas, so they are equal. However, the liberation of the Buddhas has five distinct superiorities: the superiority of complete purity, the complete purity of the field, the attainment of the Dharmakaya, the complete enjoyment of the Mahayana Dharma, and the accomplishment of the benefit of sentient beings by the Nirmanakaya, and the unceasing activity. First, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have not abandoned the obscuration of knowledge, so they are not as completely pure as the Buddhas. Moreover, although they have abandoned the seeds of their afflictions, they have not abandoned the subtle habitual tendencies. Even if they attain Arhatship, they still jump and run like monkeys due to the habitual tendencies of having been monkeys in the past, and they look at mirrors and the surface of begging bowls in order to look at their own faces due to the habitual tendencies of having been prostitutes in the past, etc. Although they are without afflictions, they still have a part of those habitual tendencies, but the Buddhas do not possess even the subtle two obscurations, so they are completely pure and extremely superior. Because the Buddhas purify the fields, they are able to show the arrangement of the completely pure field, such as the ground of jewels, the wish-fulfilling tree, and the stream of nectar, but the Shravakas cannot, so there is the superiority of the completely pure field. Because the Buddhas realize the two selflessnesses, they attain the Dharmakaya of suchness, great equality, but the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas only have the liberated body that realizes the selflessness of the person.
