Grasping at the name 'This is a pot' becomes the reason for thinking that the thing is not real. Because in reality, there is no essential connection between name and thing. However, since the thing that appears as a sign is suddenly labeled with a name, when the name is remembered, the thing also appears in the mind, and this is also labeling the thing as a name. Therefore, confusing and grasping the signs of name and thing is the reason for grasping various dharmas as distinct, which is considered the characteristic of the imagined nature of dualistic mind. What is the characteristic of other-powered nature? 'Three kinds of three appearances' means that the first three appearances are the appearance of place, thing, and body, which are the object of grasping, the side of form. The latter three appearances are the appearance of mind, grasping, and discrimination, which are the grasper, the side of mind and mental factors. Among them, place is the appearance of the container world. Thing is the six objects of the external world: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma. The appearance of body is the six faculties: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. The appearance of mind is the afflicted mind, which focuses on the alaya consciousness and clings to self. Grasping is the five sense consciousnesses from eye consciousness to body consciousness. Discrimination is mind consciousness, because it completely distinguishes various objects and discriminates this and that. The latter three appearances are considered to be the grasper, and the former three appearances are considered to be the characteristic of the grasped. Because all these six appearances are merely appearances like dreams arising from the awakening of the seeds of habit in the alaya consciousness, although the difference between grasper and grasped is not established, they appear as dualistic as if they exist, therefore, the non-real imagined nature, the minds and mental factors of the three realms are the characteristics of other-powered nature. The Lankavatara Sutra also says: 'Body and enjoyment, dwelling are similar, I say it is only mind.' Therefore, the basis of all phenomena that appear as outer and inner, the alaya consciousness with its retinue of seven consciousnesses, the mind and mental factors are called other-powered, that is, the habits of all afflictions.

Because it appears as the Dharma of grasping and being grasped from the dependent arising of the ground, it is therefore called "other-powered." What is the perfectly established? It is the nature of the emptiness of the Dharma realm. In this, there is no nature of the apprehended and the apprehender, the nature of the completely imputed, and the nature of the two emptinesses, that is, the nature of suchness exists. The absence of grasping and being grasped is the presence of suchness, and the presence of suchness is the absence of grasping and being grasped. Therefore, whether one speaks of existence or non-existence, there is no difference in meaning, they are the same and equal. This is because the two, grasping and being grasped, are completely eliminated, so suchness is completely established. If suchness is completely established, then the two, grasping and being grasped, will be eliminated in a completely exclusive way, so there is no difference in meaning between such existence and non-existence. From the aspect of being mixed with adventitious stains, it is not pacified; from the aspect of its own essence, it is naturally pure and luminous, so it is pacified. It is not an object of speculation, because it is free from all the elaborations of grasping and being grasped, so it is non-conceptual, and this is the nature of the perfectly established. To know or symbolize that these three natures exist on the five bases is the five grounds of symbolic yoga: the base and the arising or establishment, like a mirror, appearance, and the place or support. Through these five aspects, one should know that all dharmas are merely imputed, how the part of the completely imputed exists; to abandon the unreal discriminations that appear as grasping and being grasped, how the aspect of the other-powered is; and to clearly symbolize and understand how the Dharma nature of the perfectly established, which is the basis to be purified, exists. If one asks what these five are considered to be, then the Buddhas have understood the two kinds of selflessness, and have explained their meaning as it is, so the twelve branches of scripture are called the Dharma of the concordant cause, that is, concordant with the Dharma of realization understood by the Buddhas, or it is the cause of obtaining it, so it is called the concordant cause. If someone wants to realize that suchness, then first on the path of accumulation, one should listen well to the Dharma, which is the concordant cause of realizing the Dharma realm, and contemplate those meanings, etc.
