Therefore, since there is no clinging to its grasper and grasped (gzung 'dzin), it is also not conceptual thought. Moreover, since one understands that the self-characteristics and general characteristics of all phenomena are unmixed, like illusions and mirages, it is also not non-conceptual. It is said that all knowable things are included in these four, because there are no phenomena other than mind-only, and because these four states of mind and the dharmadhatu encompass all knowable things. Fourth, the complete search for universal contamination and purification is explained by two verses, beginning with "one's own realm." The nature of universal contamination, which is encompassed by the three of affliction, karma, and birth or maturation, and the realm of purification, which is encompassed by the noble path and nirvana, are examined. Moreover, realm, seed, and cause are the same in meaning. The alaya-consciousness, together with the predispositions of grasper and grasped, is called one's own realm. From it, the two, grasper and grasped, appear, and at the time of appearance, together with ignorance, which does not know the nature of things, and other afflictions such as attachment, the conceptual thought of consciousness, which grasps objects such as forms and clings to them, arises intensely, and thus one is born and enters again and again in samsara. In this way, even at the time of the appearance of duality, the two entities of grasper and grasped are completely abandoned, because they are not originally independent of each other, but due to the delusion of mind, they appear as two, and by clinging to two, one knows that samsara is established, and this is the search for the nature of universal contamination. The search for the nature of purification is: in the stage of application, a person who has obtained the special characteristics of focusing on the Dharma as explained above, abides in the other-powered mind, in one's own realm or the dharmadhatu of reality, possesses the first ground, realizes it on the grounds of the path of cultivation, and in order to cultivate the yoga of calm and insight that corresponds to it, that reality itself does not appear as the two, grasper and grasped, and thus one progresses further and further, up to the ground of Buddhahood. What is the example of that? The minds of sentient beings appear as grasper and grasped, and because of clinging, they are defiled by delusion, therefore they are unable to manifest the liberation of the mind from afflictions, and the liberation of wisdom from ignorance.

The wise realize the absence of grasping and fixation, and by dwelling in its meaning, they manifest the two liberations through the power of calm abiding and insight. For example, just as a mind that is damaged like stiff leather due to alcohol etc., is softened and made pliable by calm abiding like water and oil; and just as an arrow twisted by wrong views such as the view of self and eternalism/nihilism, which make the mind contrary to reality, is straightened by heating it with insight like fire. Thus, by taming the mind with the inverted path, making it non-inverted, ultimately in the ultimate state of Buddhahood, one obtains the liberation of mind and the liberation of wisdom, which will never be lost. Fifth, the complete search for only consciousness. The mind appears as two aspects, which is declared in two verses. The meaning of "only consciousness" is that there are only mind and mental factors, and there is no external object. However, just this word "only," There are two tenets: one that obscures form but does not obscure mental factors, and some Mind-Only practitioners obscure both mind and form. Here, it is intended that both can be done. According to the former, mind refers to the eight consciousnesses such as the Alaya, together with mental factors, which appear as the two aspects of grasper and grasped, meaning that there is no external object of grasping other than the mind. According to the latter, the mind itself merely appears as the two aspects of grasper and grasped, and other than that, there are no mental factors and grasper and grasped. These two explanations are stated in the 'Commentary on Wisdom Steadfastness'. According to the former, it is the tenet that mind and mental factors are different entities, and according to the latter, it is clear that it is the tenet that they are not different entities. Likewise, the mind appears as afflictive emotions such as attachment and hatred, or it appears as faith and diligence, etc., but there are no external afflictive emotions and virtuous dharmas other than the mind. Thus, the mind, the Alaya itself, appears as various dharmas to be grasped, and manifests various aspects of the grasper. However, the appearance of the mind as grasper and grasped is only an appearance, and it does not exist as it appears, therefore there is no self-nature of various dharmas different from the mind.
