In order to refute the extremes of clinging and denying the basis of appearance as having no other power, it is said in the Differentiation of the Middle and the Extremes: "The unreal is the completely conceptualized, these two are not existent in it." etc., and this is the Middle Way. As it is said. If one understands in this way, then one knows that the phenomena of the apprehended and the apprehender, although appearing, are not established by their own nature, like an illusion, and therefore one is not afraid of samsara and does not cling to nirvana. Because of being afraid of the suffering of samsara, one quickly seeks the peace of nirvana, those who go to peace and happiness by the lesser vehicle enter into the extreme of peace, in order to refute this extreme, it is asserted in this way by the doctrine of being free from the two extremes. Although the apprehended and the apprehender are non-dual, the cause of mistaking them as two, and the nature of the mistake, are considered to be the consciousness of form and the consciousness of non-form. The cause of the mistake is the consciousness that appears as the five sense faculties and the five objects, which appear as if they are different from the mind. For example, in a dream, the images of horses, cattle, women, etc., appear in the field of experience of one's own senses, those are one's own consciousness appearing as the apprehended, but without knowing that, one considers them as real apprehended objects other than the knower, like that, the appearance as an external object is the cause of the mistake. The nature of the mistake is considered to be the non-form consciousness, that is, the six aggregates of consciousness, such as eye consciousness, themselves grasp as the apprehended and the apprehender. Although one mistakes them as two in this way, since there is no apprehended that is different from the apprehender, therefore the apprehension of the other does not exist either, because the two are established in dependence on each other, if one does not exist, the other does not exist either. Therefore, in reality, both the apprehended and the apprehender are established as empty. If that is the case, then the colored sense faculties such as the eyes do not exist, and the object forms etc. do not exist, then the sense consciousnesses have no cause, and it is not reasonable for them to arise. However, how is it reasonable that the appearance of the apprehended and the apprehender is undeniable? Although the apprehended and the apprehender are non-dual, it is reasonable that they appear as two, which is established by two examples, one famous in the world and the other from the scriptures. First, seeing the image of an illusory elephant and knowing its form, that is the apprehension, because what appears is meaningless, therefore it is a mistake. The nature of the mistake is the image of the apprehended elephant, and the apprehension of it.

It is said to be the knowledge of the two aspects of perception. In this regard, although there is no duality of grasper and grasped, just as there is no duality of object and subject, the mere imputation of the two, grasper and grasped, by a deluded mind does exist in the world. To take an example from the scriptures, yogis who are accustomed to ugliness attain clear appearances, but skeletons do not actually exist; because of delusion, it is merely said to be a duality of grasper and grasped. Although there is no duality of grasper and grasped as it appears in the appearance of a skeleton, the arising of a mind that imputes the two does exist. Just as in that example, on the dependent consciousness, all the appearances of defiled and purified dharmas do not exist as a duality of grasper and grasped, but it is taught that they merely appear as two. In contrast to this, all defiled phenomena, which are characterized by delusion, and all that is included in karma and afflictive maturation, are, as in the example just given, merely illusory appearances and, like the imputations of children, do not exist. Therefore, since there is no difference or contradiction between existence and non-existence, they merely appear to exist but do not actually exist, like illusions. The dharmas to be explained by the sutras, such as mindfulness and the perfections, the paths such as the powers, and the resultant dharmas, that is, the antidotal dharmas, all these do not exist as a duality of grasper and grasped, just as they are imputed by children, and they exist only as they appear. Although they appear, they do not exist as they appear, and therefore, since they have no own being or characteristic, they are also taught to be like illusions. In the Perfection of Wisdom, it is said that all dharmas are like illusions and dreams, and that nirvana is also like illusions and dreams. If the defiled side is like an illusion and the purified side is also like an illusion, how does the purified, illusion-like side eliminate the defiled, illusion-like side? Just as a king of illusion who knows illusion, who is weak and has retinue, is defeated and driven from his place by another king of illusion who is powerful and has retinue, like the place of a king,
