Thus, understanding the appearances that seem to exist, exist, be established, or be truly apparent as mere appearances, like the illusion of seeing two moons due to rubbing the eyes, is called thoroughly understanding the appearance of what truly appears. 'Appearance' refers to the cause of appearance. Therefore, because it is understood that the cause of appearance is the mind, it is said that way. During the stage of forbearance, not conceptually grasping the six objects or six things from form to dharma, and thoroughly realizing that the object of grasping is unattainable, is called thoroughly realizing that things are unattainable. During the stage of the highest worldly dharma, understanding that the six consciousness aggregates, which focus on and grasp the six objects, are without inherent existence, is called thoroughly realizing that the object of focus is unattainable. Thus, after realizing that both the grasper and the grasped are unattainable, upon attaining the first bhumi of the path of seeing, realizing that the nature of reality, the dharmadhatu, which is free from both grasper and grasped, pervades everywhere, is called thoroughly realizing the dharmadhatu. In the path of seeing of the Shravakas, realizing the selflessness of the individual, that is, merely directly realizing that there is no self of the individual in the five aggregates, thereby attaining the fruit of stream-enterer. In the path of seeing of the Bodhisattvas, not only realizing the selflessness of the individual, but also realizing that the five aggregates appear like illusions, yet because they are without inherent existence, thoroughly realizing the selflessness of phenomena. Thorough understanding with a small mind refers to the four fruits of the Shravakas, such as stream-enterer, and the Pratyekabuddhas, because these individuals only act for their own benefit and have not realized the selflessness of phenomena. Thorough understanding with the vast mind of a great being refers to the Bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis and the Tathagatas, because these individuals act for the benefit of themselves and others, and have fully realized the two kinds of selflessness. How does one thoroughly understand the established dharmas that have been understood? During the first bhumi of the path of seeing, because the dharmadhatu has been understood, realizing the twelve hundred qualities, such as being able to see the faces of a hundred Buddhas in an instant, is the realization of the established dharmas. This is also realized through correct view. Thoroughly understanding the established dharmas refers to the dharmas to be cultivated from the second to the tenth bhumis.

Also, from realization, the qualities of one's own share, such as hundreds, thousands, or even twelve thousand, increase from above. One comprehends and realizes the nature of this increase oneself. This is the true realization of a practitioner on the path of meditation. Although the latter six seem to be applied only to the path of meditation in Tibetan commentaries, I believe they do not align with the views of Vasubandhu and Sthiramati. Sixteenth, the mind-making of mastery, is indicated by "mastery." There are three types of mind-making of mastery: mastery over the purification of afflictive obscurations, mastery over the purification of both afflictive and cognitive obscurations, and mastery over the accomplishment of special qualities. First, afflictions such as attachment obstruct liberation and nirvana. Therefore, one abandons these through the path of seeing and the path of meditation, realizing the selflessness of persons, so that they will not arise again in the future. Even Hearers and Solitary Realizers who are Arhats have this much. Second, the cognitive obscuration of clinging to the belief that apprehended and apprehender phenomena have inherent existence obstructs the attainment of omniscient wisdom. Therefore, one abandons both afflictive and cognitive obscurations through the Great Vehicle path, so that they will never arise again in the future. Third, one abandons what has become an obstacle to obtaining special qualities such as the six superknowledges, the ten powers, and the fearlessnesses, and manifests those qualities, which is mastery over the extremely pure accomplishment of qualities. Seventeenth, mind-making of the path of the Lesser Vehicle, Hearers and Solitary Realizers; eighteenth, mind-making of the extensive nature, the Bodhisattva path, the Great Vehicle. These eighteen mind-makings of yogis, I believe, encompass all mind-makings of both the Great and Lesser Vehicles. Second, seeking the Dharma of the meaning to be realized, there are: seeking Suchness, seeking as illusion, likewise seeking the knowable, seeking universal defilement and purification, seeking only consciousness, seeking characteristics, seeking liberation, seeking no-self-nature, seeking tolerance of the unborn Dharma, seeking the intention explained in the One Vehicle, seeking the five sciences.

There are eleven types of seeking. The first is the complete seeking of the suchness of Dharma, such as the two verses on the constant absence of duality. Seeking the suchness of all defiled and purified dharmas should be understood through the three natures: the completely imputed, the other-powered, and the thoroughly established. Although constantly free from the two, grasper and grasped, the appearance of these two is the characteristic of the completely imputed. Thus, although there is no grasper and grasped, the basis or foundation of the illusion of their appearance is the other-powered. What is it that cannot be expressed in any way by speech and is the nature of being free from the proliferation of conceptual thought? It is the thoroughly established, the suchness of the state of all dharmas. It is separate from the dharmas of grasper and grasped, so its non-proliferated nature must be realized individually. Therefore, the characteristic of the completely imputed should be understood as being like a snake on a rope, not actually existing. The characteristic of the impure other-powered is to be abandoned, because the appearance of grasper and grasped in the other-powered is to be purified. What is considered to be naturally stainless? For the thoroughly established, all temporary stains are to be purified. Natural stainlessness means that, from the perspective of its own essence, just as the sky is naturally pure, gold is naturally pure, and water is naturally clear, there is no impurity in its own essence. However, just as the sky has clouds, gold has mud, and water has turbidity, it is obscured by temporary afflictions and not manifested. Therefore, if these afflictions are removed, the nature of purity will be manifested. If measured by the ultimate truth, in the realm of sentient beings, there is not even a dust of the dharmas of grasper and grasped other than the thoroughly established Dharmata. Although all abide in the state of Dharmata, all beings in the three realms, without realizing Dharmata, are confused about this state and cling to the dharmas of grasper and grasped. Therefore, they completely abandon clinging to the thoroughly established, which is inherent in things, and instead cling to the non-existent completely imputed.
