Those who possess discipline gradually attain samadhi through the absence of regret and so forth. Through direct perception, the characteristics of phenomena, both specific and general, are determined without error, thus giving rise to the wisdom that correctly understands the nature of phenomena. Furthermore, with regard to what is to be known, the sutras explain "dharma" and "meaning." Dharma refers to the two that are expressed by name and meaning, or it refers to the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Meaning refers to the four hidden meanings. Furthermore, the ten virtues that lead to higher realms are dharma, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment that lead to nirvana are meaning. These are what the sutras explain. The Vinaya explains the accomplishment of "dharma" and "meaning," which means that through diligent subduing of afflictions, the two are made manifest or undertaken and accomplished. The Abhidharma accurately shows "dharma" and "meaning" and makes them extremely clear, thereby making one proficient. What, then, is the necessity of seeking the dharma of the three baskets? By fully seeking and practicing these through the three wisdoms, hearing plants the habit of the path of liberation in one's own mindstream, through thinking, one realizes the meaning by gaining certainty, through meditation, one calms the discursive thoughts of distraction by relying on shamatha, and through vipassana, one thoroughly realizes suchness, thereby liberating one's own mindstream. In what way, then, are the three baskets established, and what are their etymologies? The Sutras, Abhidharma, and Vinaya, if considered from the perspective of brief summarization, each also has four meanings. A bodhisattva with intelligence, if he fully understands the three baskets of the Great and Small Vehicles and cultivates the path, will attain omniscience. The Shravakas do not seek omniscience, and even if they do not understand the three baskets, merely understanding the meaning of a single verse that shows the selflessness of the person can lead to the wisdom that knows the cessation and non-arising of one's own path. What, then, are the four meanings of the brief summary of the three baskets? Where it was taught, such as in Shravasti (present-day northern Uttar Pradesh, India), by whom it was taught, the Blessed One (Shakyamuni Buddha), and for whom it was taught, such as the questioners, these three are called the place, which is the place of origin or topic of the Sutras.
