Therefore, if faith in the Dharma is not kept in mind, and this becomes widespread, it will hinder the faith that has already arisen. Even if faith has arisen many times in the past and present, if this state is not maintained and kept in mind, then that faith will disappear. Laziness will hinder the arising of faith that has not yet arisen, because faith will not arise in a lazy person who does not strive to cultivate faith. The so-called "yoga disturbance" refers to being attached to the object pointed to by the faith generated in the past, and being attached to the object of attachment to that object in the present, which hinders the samadhi yoga of proper attention that is not attached to the objects of the grasper and the grasped. Therefore, it is said to hinder the faith of the grasper and the faith of the grasped. Bad friends, that is, evil friends, unwholesome knowledge, will hinder the faith obtained from friends. Either the faith obtained from good friends in the past is destroyed by the non-Dharma taught by evil friends, or the faith arising from the teachings of good knowledge will not arise in those controlled by evil friends. Weak accumulation of merit will hinder one's own faith. Even if one has the seed of lineage and faith, if one does not accumulate a lot of merit, one will not generate faith in the Mahayana Dharma, etc. Improperly attending to the mind in the form of permanence, bliss, purity, and self will hinder the non-erroneous faith, because one cannot truly understand impermanence, etc. Negligence will hinder manifest or present faith. Present faith arises from the causes of non-attachment, non-anger, non-ignorance, and diligence. These four causes are called non-negligence, while attachment, anger, ignorance, and laziness are called negligence, so negligence will hinder in this way. Merely hearing the sutras of provisional meaning, but not hearing the Dharma of ultimate meaning such as emptiness, etc., like this, hearing very little, only proclaiming one-sided meaning, will hinder the faith arising from words, because if one has not heard something, one will not understand its meaning, so one will not generate faith in it, and those who have not heard the aspect of ultimate meaning will not generate faith because they are afraid of profound meanings such as emptiness. Without the need for thinking and meditation

“见解”这个词,由于梵文词语dṛśi(梵文天城体:दृशि,梵文罗马拟音:dṛśi,汉语字面意思:见)也用于“见”,因此从心平等安住的禅修中,能够见到真实的意义。

Being content with mere hearing, and not needing extensive hearing, being content with any small amount of hearing, obstructs the aspiration to seek. Because this does not generate the aspiration led by wisdom born of thought, or even if it generates a little, it cannot generate it extensively and thoroughly completely. Even if one thinks about the meaning of hearing, or thinks a little, being content with not thinking extensively, but being content with little thinking, also obstructs the aspiration to seek with thought-born, as before. In short, being content with little hearing and thinking is an obstacle to not generating thought-born aspiration, or even if it generates a little, it cannot be perfectly completed. The arrogance of mere quiescence means being content with mere quiescence, and not generating higher vision, being arrogant that the cessation of outwardly distracted thoughts is sufficient. This obstructs the aspiration of view or the aspiration born of meditation, because without higher vision, mere quiescence cannot realize the truth. Moreover, being content with mere thinking and not combining it with meditation is also an obstacle to the aspiration of view. The word "view," because the Sanskrit word dṛśi (藏文:དྲྀ་ཤའི་,梵文天城体:दृशि,梵文罗马拟音:dṛśi,汉语字面意思:see) is also used for "seeing," therefore, from the meditation in which the mind is placed equally, one can see the true meaning. Similarly, "thinking it is unfamiliar" means that, like before, not repeatedly making the aspiration familiar and habitual in one's own mindstream, or being unfamiliar, obstructs the aspiration that is stolen and the aspiration that is mixed. Because the aspiration is not repeatedly made familiar and habitual in one's own mindstream, even if aspiration arises, it is easily stolen by other conditions, and a mixture of faith and non-faith will arise. Conversely to being unfamiliar, an aspiration that is very familiar and habitual is difficult to be stolen by conditions, and it is also difficult for non-faith to arise in the meantime. Therefore, thinking that the obstacle to these two is that the aspiration is unfamiliar in one's own mindstream. Not being weary of samsara is an obstacle to the aspiration of the Lesser Vehicle, because if one is not weary of samsara and is attached to it, one will not seek peaceful happiness. Similarly, being completely weary of samsara is an obstacle to the aspiration of the Great Vehicle, because being weary of samsara and wanting to abandon it completely is like a Hearer.
