Faith or conviction is the name given to the dharma that arises from the mind as a belief in the truth. Just as the forms of the past, present, and future, near and far, etc., are designated as the skandha of form, so too, to show that this conviction also has differences such as object, time, and aspect, it is said that the faith that has arisen in the past and present is called the arisen conviction, and the faith of the future is called the unarisen conviction. The conviction of grasping is the mental event of conviction itself, which is called the inner conviction. The conviction that is grasped is to focus on the conviction that has arisen before, to taste it and rejoice in it, saying, "This is good." This is called the conviction of grasping, because it takes another conviction as its object, so it is called the outer conviction. The conviction of learning as taught by a virtuous friend is called the conviction taken from a friend. That is a coarse conviction. Having the seed of faith in oneself, and the conviction arising from the power of lineage, is called the conviction of oneself, which is also called a subtle conviction. Believing and having conviction in the self and sentient beings as taught by the tirthikas is called a mistaken conviction, which is a bad conviction. Believing and having faith in the impermanence, suffering, and selflessness taught in the Buddha's teachings is called an un mistaken conviction, which is a good conviction. The conviction that arises manifestly from the collection of causes and conditions for the arising of conviction is called manifest conviction, which is called near conviction. The conviction that has not arisen manifestly because the causes and conditions for the arising of conviction have not been collected is called non-manifest conviction, which is usually only possible when the causes and conditions are collected. From this point of view, it is called far conviction, which is different from the previous conviction. The conviction that arises from listening to the holy Dharma is called the conviction that arises from sound or is born from sound. The conviction that arises from analyzing the meaning of how it was obtained through reason is called the conviction sought through thought. The conviction that arises from understanding the meaning through the power of meditation is called the conviction of view or the conviction of the one who observes the meaning. Even if faith has arisen, due to demons and tirthikas

If led to other paths, faith changes, which is called "stolen faith," which is small faith. Even if faith arises, sometimes disbelief also arises, so the mixed situation is called "mixed faith," which is intermediate. Only faith continuously arises, and disbelief does not arise, which is called "faith unmixed with discordant aspects," which is great faith. Believing in the Dharma of Hearers and Solitary Realizers for the sake of one's own peace is called "inferior or small faith." Believing in the Mahayana Dharma of the path of non-abiding Nirvana for the spontaneous accomplishment of two benefits is vast faith. From the stage of faith-practice warmth onwards, even in the stages of all paths, the faith of attaining higher and higher special qualities, if there are obstructions by afflictions such as attachment, is called "obscured faith." Without those obstructions, it is called "path-unobscured faith." Because of having respectful and constant diligence, the continuously arising faith is called "diligent faith" or "having faith." Not having such faith is called "non-diligent faith" or "not having faith." In the first ground, for the faith-practice ground that becomes the cause of realizing the Dharmadhatu, the faith of having accumulated the two accumulations of one countless eon is called "faith of accumulating accumulations." Faith without such accumulations is called "faith of not accumulating accumulations." In general, due to having or not having accumulating accumulations, faith in the Mahayana becomes vast or narrow, stable or unstable. The faith of Bodhisattvas from the first to the seventh ground is called "faith that has entered stability," because their faith has no decrease or decline. The faith of Bodhisattvas from the eighth to the tenth ground, who dwell on the pure ground, is called "faith that has gone far," because they have faith that is spontaneously accomplished without discrimination, and they have gone far from the realm of conceptualization with signs and effort, so it is said that way. Thus, the types of faith are explained with two verses. Secondly, the sixteen Dharmas that obstruct faith are explained with three verses, starting with non-attention.
