The phenomena of the earth appear in many different ways, but ultimately, the self-nature of phenomena and individuals is emptiness. Because the self-nature of the two selflessnesses is emptiness and luminosity, when it manifests in this way, it is free from clinging to the self-nature of individuals and phenomena. In the realm of the Buddhas, the Buddhas are the wisdom body of the self-nature of the Dharmadhatu, inconceivable and possessing all aspects. Therefore, the Buddhas do not possess any characteristics of the self-nature of individuals and phenomena that are grasped by ordinary minds. Ultimately, there is no difference among the Buddhas, but differences can be established nominally. This is explained by the verse "Because of different lineages," etc. Some say that if one Buddha manifests enlightenment in one world, then in other worlds of the ten directions, other Buddhas will not be born or appear. Therefore, there is only one Buddha in all worlds, and he benefits beings in different worlds through emanations. Others say that from beginningless samsara, there has only been one Buddha, and that this one Buddha performs various Buddha activities in all Buddha lands for the benefit of sentient beings. Still others say that even the Buddhas who have attained the ultimate ground are not singular, because the Dharmakaya, which has abandoned the concept of self and is free from the two obscurations, is also manifold. Both the view that the Buddha is singular and the view that the Buddha is multiple are incorrect. What is the reason? Because in the world realms, there are limitless sentient beings who possess the potential to attain Buddhahood. Since the lineages of causes are different, it is not reasonable for the result to be only one Buddha. For example, it cannot be said that from a large pile of grains, only one grain can sprout and the others cannot. Just as well-prepared food can satisfy and benefit anyone, whoever accumulates the two accumulations will have the meaning of attaining Buddhahood. If there were only one Buddha, then the accumulation of the two accumulations by many people for the sake of attaining Buddhahood would become meaningless, which is unreasonable. Therefore, the Buddha is not singular. When the Buddhas first generate the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, I, great Bodhi,

If one vows, "Having attained Buddhahood, I shall establish all sentient beings in that state of Bodhi." If there is only this one Buddha, and no other sentient beings attain Buddhahood, then this Buddha has not established even one sentient being in the state of Buddhahood. In that case, the vow he initially made would not be fulfilled. But this is unreasonable, because the Buddhas fulfill their vows to benefit sentient beings, so there is not just one Buddha. Up to this point, it refutes the claim that there is only one Buddha in the world, and no other Buddhas in other worlds. The statement that a Chakravartin and a Buddha do not appear simultaneously in one world refers to one world of the four continents. For example, the supreme emanation, King Shakya, just one Buddha, in one realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds, for the hundred billion worlds of the four continents, simultaneously manifests that many emanations, such as entering the womb, appearing as individual emanation Buddhas, as stated in the *Compendium of Mahayana*. Now, from the perspective of time, it refutes the claim that there has been only one Buddha since beginningless time. Because it is impossible to attain Buddhahood without accumulating the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, and these two accumulations do not arise spontaneously without another Buddha bestowing prophecy, therefore, before the earlier Buddhas, there were other Buddhas. Just as samsara has no beginning, so too does Buddhahood have no beginning. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that there has been only one Buddha since beginningless time, but rather that they have been transmitted one after another, thus accomplishing many Buddhas. For the reasons just stated, the Buddhas are not limited to just one, but there are countless Buddhas. Even so, when one attains the pure realm of the Dharmadhatu, free from the defilement of the two obscurations, utterly pure, and uncontaminated, there is not even the slightest difference in that state. Therefore, the Buddhas are distinguished or established by the unconditioned, possessing the two purities of Suchness. Therefore, from this perspective, there are not many Buddhas either, because all are the Dharmadhatu Suchness.
