To abide in the nature of non-conceptual wisdom, or the emptiness of all phenomena, suchness completely purified, which is the Dharmadhatu, and the transformation of the eight consciousnesses into the four wisdoms, these five are called transformation of the basis. In short, all impure appearances that appear as places, the eight consciousnesses that appear as meaning, and the appearances that appear as bodies, are inherently and naturally abiding in suchness, but are obscured by the two obscurations, and their nature is not seen as it is. By abandoning the two obscurations through the path, the immeasurable and infinite appearances that are distinguished by complete purity are called transformation of the basis. If we consider the reality of things, the two, grasper and grasped, are without inherent existence and do not move from equality. If we consider the extent of things, all knowable things appear like illusions without being mixed, but there is no sign of distinction, and it is equality. Such a transformation of the basis is the merit of the white Dharma without outflows, possessing the most excellent qualities such as powers and fearlessness that are not possessed by hearers and solitary realizers. Obtaining this is called the nature of the Buddha. This is because Bodhisattvas, in their meditative equipoise, realize all phenomena without any object of focus, like the face of the sky, through extremely pure or utterly pure non-conceptualization. And in the subsequent attainment, although limitless knowable things appear, they are seen as illusions and so forth, which is called the wisdom of the utterly great realm, or the wisdom of the pure world. These two are attained through the path of cultivation. At the time of Buddhahood, there is no difference between meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment, because with self-born or inconceivable great wisdom, all phenomena of suchness and extent are seen simultaneously. Secondly, there are two parts: how the transformation of the basis of the Buddha is superior to the transformation of the basis of hearers and solitary realizers, and the explanation of its ten divisions. First, the Tathagata Buddha abides in the transformed basis of the uncontaminated realm because he has understood or passed away in the same way as the Dharmadhatu abides. For example, just as the king of mountains, Mount Sumeru, rises high above all mountains, and when looking in the ten directions from its top, one can see all the beautiful and ugly forms near and far, so too, the Tathagata is superior and higher than the transformation of the basis of hearers and solitary realizers, and the complete transformation of the basis of the Buddha is like the high mountain king.

Abiding upon the lotus, he gazes upon all beings with great compassion. He also bestows great compassion upon the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who only seek their own peaceful Nirvana. Because these Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, from beginningless Samsara, have not benefited sentient beings who were once their relatives, have abandoned great compassion, and lack the great wisdom to realize the selflessness of phenomena, they have not been able to eliminate the obscurations to knowledge, and therefore have not attained omniscience, so he also shows them compassion. What need is there to mention his love for other beings who delight in the suffering realm of Samsara, for they have not been liberated from the three kinds of suffering! Secondly, is the classification of the qualities of the Buddha's transformation. The term "abiding" refers to the Buddha's transformed state, which possesses extraordinary qualities. What are these qualities? They are constantly and solely benefiting sentient beings, thus engaging in benefiting others; and this transformation is the most excellent of all Dharmas, such as the transformation of worldly beings and the transformation of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who have transcended the world, thus it is a supreme engagement; for ordinary beings, the causes of arising afflictions are: dwelling near objects, improper attention, and the non-abandonment of the imprints of afflictions. But the Buddha's transformation never engages in the cause of arising afflictions; having attained transformation, one's self can never engage in afflictions and unwholesome actions, thus it is a turning away from them; having attained transformation, even if attained once, it will never be lost until the end of Samsara, thus it is a constant and uninterrupted engagement, which is called universal engagement. Or, because it engages in all Dharmas that are antidotes to all afflictions, it is also called universal engagement. Furthermore, "two" refers to engaging in both the initial manifestation of perfect enlightenment and the final manifestation of entering Nirvana. Starting from the Buddha, in all the ten directions of the world, the Buddha subdues beings with supreme emanations, constantly manifesting the aspect of great enlightenment. In the ultimate sense, there is no engagement in these two, because having realized the equality of both Samsara and Nirvana, it is a non-dual engagement. Moreover, merely the liberation of having abandoned the seeds of afflictions
