Because it is the cause and condition of the unsurpassed. The Buddha, like a source or origin of various jewels, is the way to attain the perfection of one's own benefit. For the reason of ripening the crops of virtue of all beings. The Buddha is considered like a cloud, possessing the power to accomplish the perfection of benefiting others. Explanation of the meaning of the above two verses: The Buddha himself possesses all knowable dharmas, or is devoid of all dharmas. Because all dharmas are not different from the nature of dharma, that is, suchness, therefore, measured from the perspective of the exhaustive nature, it is possessing all dharmas. Also, if measured from the perspective of the suchness, it is devoid of all dharmas. Because in suchness there is no characteristic of grasper, grasped, and dualistic dharmas. Therefore, the non-dual Buddha, like a jewel, is the source or origin of the jewel-like dharma that produces the extremely vast Mahayana scriptures, as well as the dharma of realization, such as the ground, paramitas, powers, and fearlessness, etc., immeasurable and vast dharmas. For beings, from beginning to end, whatever is a good and virtuous saying, if one understands its meaning at once, then until the end of samsara it will not be exhausted, or because it rains down a great rain of dharma of inexhaustible categories of dharma, therefore, for the crops of beings or sentient beings, like the pure and undefiled seeds of virtue of the paramitas, it is the cause of their extremely vast growth, so it is like a cloud. Third, regarding the qualities of becoming a supreme refuge, there are three: the accomplishment of one's own benefit, benefiting others, and establishing an incomparable refuge for both of these. First, if one takes refuge in the Buddha, it is not a refuge with a time limit, but constantly from all the aggregates of afflictions such as ignorance and craving, as well as all the contaminated evil deeds such as the ten non-virtues and the five heinous crimes, and from aging and death, the Buddha himself will completely protect. Because in the Buddha, the three existences of afflictions, karma, and lifespan or birth will not permanently arise, so the one who takes refuge in it, once he obtains the refuge of the fruition, his own benefit will be completely fulfilled, so it is his own refuge.

It shows who is the refuge. Those who are threatened by worldly fears, fleeing to mountains and caves, etc., seeking refuge, and taking refuge in worldly kings, worldly minor deities, Brahma, and Ishvara, etc., cannot be true refuges. Secondly, the Buddha can also provide five kinds of refuge to other sentient beings: protecting from all harms in the world, as stated in the scriptures. Through the blessings of the Tathagata, the blind regain sight, the deaf hear, the insane regain their sanity, and various diseases and bad years, etc., are pacified merely by the Buddha's arrival in the city, and whoever prays, all calamities are pacified. Furthermore, the Tathagata emits light, touching beings in hells and other evil realms, instantly pacifying all their suffering and causing them to be reborn in the heavens. In hells and other places, remembering the Buddha or hearing the Buddha's name also leads to liberation from them. Moreover, those who have gone astray, engaging in meaningless asceticism and wrong livelihoods, such as heretics, are rescued from the wrong paths and placed on the path to liberation in the heavens. Furthermore, for those who are attached to self and what belongs to self, who have the view of the aggregates as self, they are saved by teaching the absence of self of persons, guiding them into the peaceful Nirvana of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. For those of uncertain disposition, who have entered or wish to enter the path of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, they are saved from the lower vehicle by guiding them into the Mahayana, therefore the Buddha is the supreme refuge for all others. Thirdly, the three verses respectively show the reality, being the supreme refuge, and being the great refuge. Summarizing what has been said above, the Buddha himself is the refuge of the world, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas take refuge in the Nirvana of peaceful oneness, compared to the transcendental refuge, the Buddha himself is the unparalleled refuge, and is considered the most supreme of all refuges. Why? Because the Buddha can save from all kinds of fears in samsara, all imminent harms, and various wrong views such as the view of the aggregates as self, the lower vehicle, the suffering of many beings in evil realms, and those who have gone astray, from birth, old age, sickness, death, and their

It is because it is a refuge that permanently protects from all afflictions and karmas. For example, in some versions, evil destinies are used instead of karma, then it should be understood as liberation from the afflictions of all karmas such as the uninterrupted karma of falling into evil destinies and the ten non-virtuous actions. The reason for being a supreme refuge is that it is ultimately for one's own benefit and the benefit of others. It is like when one becomes a Buddha, the three bodies with the merits of the power and other resultant dharmas being very complete are the ultimate benefit for oneself; for the benefit of others, teaching the scriptures and other twelve branches of the sacred Dharma to sentient beings, subduing them with that method, proclaiming in accordance with their faculties, abilities, and thoughts, the unobstructed wisdom that can liberate the continuum is wisdom; the perfection of loving-kindness that never abandons all beings at any time is great compassion. Apart from those two, it is accomplishing the ultimate benefit for others. Because of possessing the merits of the ultimate two benefits, therefore the Buddha himself is the supreme refuge in this world. It is a great refuge because in the world realm encompassed by direction and time, it completely eliminates all harm to all sentient beings and makes them permanently peaceful, and it has the power to accomplish all perfections of the world and beyond. The Buddha is indeed a great refuge. Fourth, regarding the merits of transformation. There are two: the explanation of the transformation itself, and the display of its superiority. First, for the continuum of consciousness, the habits or seeds of afflictions and cognitive obscurations, those that have been constantly connected without separation from beginningless samsara, in order to eliminate them, from the first to the tenth ground, from the transcendental supreme wisdom, born from the great cause of the two accumulations, and those that are non-conceptual, as vast as the sky, each of which has nine such as the great wisdom of great wisdom, therefore possessing the nature of all kinds, or like that being completely destroyed or abandoned by all kinds, the object is the five aggregates, which are the nature of the extremely pure realm of Dharma, and the consciousness of the object-possessor
