Because of causing others to ripen, one becomes the supreme friend of beings, thus indicating that one's own ripening is the basis for causing others to ripen, and that one possesses the two qualities of increasing one's own Dharma body. Secondly, the analogy is, what is meant by "ripening"? For example, as the world considers it, for a wound and food, in their respective order, the draining of pus and being edible are what is meant by "ripening." If fruits, etc., are squeezed before they are ripe with pus, and there is no pus draining, it is not helpful for the illness; if it is ripe with pus, it is permissible to drain the pus from the wound, and when the time is right, it is said that the wound is ripe. If grapes and other fruits are not ripe, or if food is not cooked, etc., it cannot be used; if it is fully ripe to a certain extent, it can be used. Similarly, for this basis of the five aggregates, the two aspects of what should be abandoned and the antidote, in the above order, pacification and enjoyment themselves are what is meant by "ripening." Just as diseases such as sores are filled with pus, and after ripening become sores, and the disease is cured after the pus drains, so too, for this body basis, one is able to abandon afflictions such as attachment, thereby pacifying it; just as ripe food can be enjoyed, so too, if one constantly practices the virtuous side on that basis and is able to meditate, then that person is called fully ripened. Even if one merely rejoices in the Mahayana Dharma, if that has not ripened, one will not be able to accept it through relying on a spiritual friend, listening, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma. When joy is fully ripened, one will be able to accept the sacred Dharma, and the same should be understood for the other eight "mothers." Because when one is fully ripened, one can actually do that thing, therefore the bodhisattva's faculties such as faith are fully ripened, increasing more and more, thereby perfecting the path of the Great Vehicle and the Dharma of the fruit in one's own mindstream, and in order to ripen sentient beings, the bodhisattva should constantly train the faculties, as it is said. In order to transform inferior faculties into intermediate and intermediate into superior, it is very important to constantly train the faculties. If one trains the faculties, one will realize what one has not realized before, and obtain what one has not obtained before, and the qualities will increase greatly, up to the level of Buddhahood.

Ro! Secondly, the methods for maturing other sentient beings are threefold: classification, intention, and action. First, there are eight classifications: maturing sentient beings by freeing them from afflictions such as attachment; similarly, fully maturing all beings of the three vehicles; maturing them in higher realms through worldly paths, which is reversible, while maturing them through the three vehicles is irreversible, thus it is extremely maturing; to accord with the dispositions of those to be tamed, teaching appropriate Dharma such as the unattractive to those with attachment, thus maturing in accordance or corresponding maturation, which is different from the former. Without bias, and with respect for others, diligently striving to make them well-matured; after oneself attains the first ground, establishing others upon it, this is especially maturing or maturing through realization; constantly teaching the Dharma taught by the Tathagata to sentient beings without distortion, thus it is constantly maturing; from the stage of adhimukti-carya-bhumi (stage of practice based on conviction) up to the tenth bhumi, it is desired to make them more and more mature. Secondly, the difference in intention is: just as the bodhisattvas, with the intention of benefiting all sentient beings by wishing to establish them in temporary and ultimate happiness, abide in fully maturing all beings in this world, or just as worldly parents and relatives are not good at maintaining such intention towards their own children and relatives, why is that? Because although parents etc. have love for their own children etc., they can only temporarily give some benefit in this life, but they are not good at generating the intention to establish them in the virtue that is the cause of lasting happiness, and sometimes they even lead them to commit evil deeds. Just as when acting out of love for the sake of benefiting other sentient beings, the loving-kindness that wishes to make other sentient beings temporarily and permanently happy, is like that or similar to that. If worldly people do not even want to be loving towards themselves, what need is there to say about others who are extremely disliked in their minds? Although individual people love themselves, due to the control of ignorance, they kill and take what is not given for the sake of happiness in this life.
