The benefits of that ground are: two aspects based on calm abiding, two aspects based on insight, and one common aspect based on both calm abiding and insight, thus it is considered to be of five natures. The two aspects based on calm abiding are: by the power of the mind of calm abiding being workable, all the causes of bad rebirths, which have become the latent tendencies of the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, are destroyed and exhausted in every single moment, this is the first benefit. Even the calm abiding and insight of aspirational conduct can only weaken the signs of the causes of bad rebirths, but cannot destroy them from the root. However, from the first ground onwards, they are destroyed from the root in every single moment. Similarly, being free from various concepts of different dharmas such as form, formlessness, conditioned, unconditioned, etc., and abiding with a single-pointed mind in the absence of characteristics, and experiencing the joy of dharma to the utmost, is the second benefit. These two are the qualities that belong to the aspect of calm abiding. The two qualities that belong to the aspect of insight are: although all dharmas are without characteristics and of one taste, one also obtains the appearance of the knowable dharmas of the ten directions and three times, and the various establishments of the dharmas of scripture, obtaining the appearance of immeasurable and unlimited dharmas; and even without analysis, the reasons that accord with the time of purification also appear manifestly. What belongs to both calm abiding and insight is the abandonment of liberation and the cause of realizing the Dharmakaya, and the gradual increase from above, there are five in total. The nature of these five has already been explained before. These five benefits are to be known by Bodhisattvas through their own inner experience, therefore it is also permissible to make them the signs of the ground. In the "Commentary of Intelligence," only the third benefit is explained, and the ending part after that is incomplete. Seventh, the etymology of the ground is: for one's own benefit, it is close to attaining unsurpassed Bodhi, that is, it is certain to be attained; for the benefit of others, it is seeing that one is able to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, and thus great joy arises, therefore the first ground is called the Joyful Ground. The second ground is called the Immaculate Ground because it is free from the defilement of immoral discipline, and the intention and effort of the inferior vehicle. The third ground is that by the power of Samadhi, immeasurable dharmas are obtained, and also a great appearance of dharma is made for others.

Therefore, it is called "Radiant." The fourth ground is like this: because it possesses something like light that thoroughly burns away the afflictions and cognitive obscurations of meditating on the Dharma that is in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, that ground is called "The One that Radiates Light by Burning Away the Two Obscurations." The fifth ground is because it completely ripens beings by realizing the four truths, and because it can tolerate the wrongdoings of beings and also protect one's own mind. Since these two are difficult to do, therefore, wise ones accept what is difficult to train in, so it is called "The Ground Difficult to Train In." The sixth ground is based on the Perfection of Wisdom. Because the nature of both samsara, which arises through dependent origination in the proper order, and nirvana, which arises from reversing from the proper order, becomes manifest on this ground, therefore, it does not abide in samsara or nirvana, so it is said to be the "Manifest Ground." The seventh ground is connected to the eighth ground by a single path, that is, because it is close to it, immediately preceding it. In order to complete the endeavor of practice, it is considered to be a place that has gone far away. The eighth ground is because the conceptualization of characteristics from the sixth ground and above, and the conceptualization that includes the effort of the seventh ground's non-characteristic, do not waver, and non-conceptual wisdom is spontaneously accomplished. Therefore, it is called "Immovable." The ninth ground is because it possesses excellent, superior wisdom of the four individual correct knowledges, therefore, it is called "Good Intelligence." The tenth ground is like a great cloud spreading across the sky. Because the immeasurable doors of dharani and samadhi, like a great cloud, pervade the Dharma realm, the Dharma of the mind stream, the Dharma of space, or all that is knowable, therefore, it is called the "Cloud of Dharma." Bodhisattvas abide on these ten grounds. So, what is the meaning of abiding? Because the immeasurable merits of the two accumulations gathered on that ground and that ground are accomplished in various ways, the mind is extremely joyful, and it always abides in everything, therefore, it is considered that the grounds of Bodhisattvas are abiding. Why is it called "ground"? Because the sound of Bhūmi (藏文:བྷཱུ་མི་,梵文天城体:भूमि,梵文罗马拟音:bhūmi,汉语字面意思:地) in the world is the basis for countless elements, sentient beings, plants, forests, etc., therefore, there is fear of falling based on it.
