The first ground's qualities of mental engagement. The sutra says, 'Oh, sons of the Victorious One, for this, beings diligently accumulate roots of virtue, diligently accumulate collections, and so forth.' Just as it is said. The first ground is the cause for engaging the mind to obtain the second ground. Oh, sons of the Victorious One, thus, a bodhisattva who has greatly trained in the first ground develops a superior desire for the second ground, and ten thoughts arise in their mind. What are the ten? They are: the thought of honesty, the thought of gentleness, the thought of capability, and so forth.' Just as it is said. Furthermore, in order to realize the meaning of each ground, contemplating and engaging the mind with how the collections of names, sentences, and letters are explained is how to engage the mind with the establishment. Thus, when the ground is accomplished by engaging the mind with how the ground is established, since the ground and all its establishments are merely the appearance of one's own mind, and because it is not established as something other than that, Those grounds are also without an object of grasping because they are known to be the conceptual thoughts that one's own mind has fabricated. If there is no object of grasping, then it is known that the grasper itself is also not established in that way, and therefore one does not conceptually think about the grasper. One should know that there is no grasper or grasped. Thus, by knowing the mental engagement of each ground, and that it is only one's own mind, and that there is no grasper or grasped, the first ground is accomplished, and so forth. By meditating on all the others in the same way, one should know that each ground is accomplished. Thus, the meditation on and accomplishment of the grounds is inconceivable to ordinary beings, because the grounds are to be known individually by the noble ones who have attained them, and because the establishment of those grounds is also the dharma of the realm of activity of the Buddhas. Therefore, meditating on each of the grounds, and the completion of meditation, and the accomplishment of the grounds, should also be known to be inconceivable to ordinary beings and solitary realizers. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra, 'Just as the tracks of birds in the sky are extremely difficult to see and impossible to describe, so too, the grounds of the Sugata's sons cannot be known by the realm of mind and thought.' Just as it is said. Sixth, the signs of attaining the grounds are divided into two: the actual signs and the qualities of the grounds that possess signs. First, seeing water from a water bird and seeing fire from smoke.

As is known, it is explained how to know that one has attained a bhumi by what sign or characteristic. The five signs mentioned above are common signs of bodhisattvas who have attained and have not attained a bhumi, but here, ten signs of those who have attained a bhumi are explained. Together with the clear appearance in the mind of the dharmas to be abandoned, adopted, and meditated upon for whatever bhumi has been attained, and the faith and desire to attain the higher bhumis, is the first characteristic or sign. Because of seeing the truth, not being afraid or intimidated by the profound and vast dharmas is the second. For any form of hardship and suffering, such as heat, cold, fatigue, etc., and the practice of giving away one's head, limbs, etc., without discouragement due to a lack of courage, and without any turning back, is the third. From the power of the two accumulations, although one has realized the nature of reality, one does not need to rely on others for each of the bhumis that have been accomplished, so the self-reliance of not relying on others for explaining their classifications and meditating on their meaning is the fourth. Even at the time of attaining the first bhumi, one gains skill in thoroughly understanding all the classifications for accomplishing all the remaining bhumis. By the power of abiding in the non-conceptual wisdom of meditative equipoise, in the post-meditation state, one knows the means by which the remaining bhumis will be accomplished through pure, supramundane wisdom. Therefore, knowing the means by which each of the higher bhumis will be accomplished, the means by which the first bhumi practitioner enters the second bhumi, such as straightforwardness and gentleness, and the means by which the second bhumi practitioner enters the third bhumi, such as pure intention and unwavering intention, are taught. Likewise, being extremely skilled in distinguishing and establishing the means by which the higher bhumis are accomplished for all the bhumis is the fifth. Having a mind that does not regard limitless sentient beings as self and other, that is, attaining equality, is the sixth. Not being led away means that those who have entered the bhumis are endowed with a complete accumulation of merit, and because the accumulation of wisdom realizes all dharmas as emptiness, they have no attachment or hatred for anything. Therefore, they are not arrogant due to praise and happiness, nor are they discouraged or depressed by lack of praise and suffering, and they are not influenced by any circumstances, which means not being led away or unleadable, is the seventh sign. Those who have entered the bhumis possess the complete wealth of buddhas and bodhisattvas that transcends the world.
