As the Buddha said, praising various examples such as crossing rivers, crossing unclean places, and crossing pits of fire. Therefore, a bodhisattva who is diligent in discipline is more excellent than householder bodhisattvas. The reason why bodhisattvas take rebirth in samsara is the superior intention of wanting to benefit sentient beings, so it is explained. For bodhisattvas who are stable in all the grounds of the stage of faith and the ten bhumis, connecting other sentient beings to the fruit of happiness, which is both painful and pleasing, in the next world or future lives, is the thought of happiness. Wishing to engage in virtue without afflictions in this life is the thought of benefit. Wishing to ultimately attain nirvana with or without remainder is also, as mentioned above, the thought of benefit and happiness. Wishing to be placed in happiness is the superior intention of happiness, and wishing to be free from afflictions is the superior intention of benefit. In short, wishing all sentient beings temporary and ultimate benefit and happiness is called superior intention. The classification of superior intention is that in the stage of faith, because the nature of reality is not directly realized, clinging to the apprehended and the apprehender to be abandoned by seeing, it is called impure superior intention. From the first to the seventh bhumi is pure superior intention. In the three pure bhumis of non-retrogression, it is called extremely pure superior intention. Bodhisattvas thus wish for superior intention for sentient beings. The reason why the eighth bhumi and so on are called the stage of non-retrogression is that once the eighth bhumi is attained, it is impossible to regress to a state characterized by diligent effort. Thus, in terms of sentient beings, there are two types: the superior intention of benefit and the superior intention of happiness. In terms of one's own continuum, there are three types: impure, pure, and extremely pure, which are the five classifications of superior intention. Relying on superior intention to gather sentient beings is the function of superior intention. That is, to completely gather through aspiration, in the stage of faith, aspiring to place all sentient beings in the realm of nirvana, thus generating the mind and completely holding all sentient beings through aspiration. From the time of attaining the first bhumi, having attained equanimity towards oneself and all sentient beings, therefore completely gathering through equanimity.

The holding of gathering, and the complete gathering by becoming the owner, that is: Wheel-turning kings and others become the owners of places, possessing power and might, thereby benefiting sentient beings with wealth and placing them in the ten virtuous actions, and completely gathering them, etc. Completely gathering by leading the assembly, that is: Becoming the teacher and abbot of the assembly, gathering the assembly of retinue disciples through the method of teaching the Dharma, thereby taking care of sentient beings, thus there are four ways of gathering. The causes for Bodhisattvas to take birth are four, that is: The births of wise Bodhisattvas, those who abide on the ground of conduct by faith, mostly arise from the cause of karma, because they have not obtained mastery over their minds, so wherever they think and make aspirations, it is not certain that they will be born there. Occasionally there are cases of being born according to their wishes, but mainly through the karma of accumulating merit, they are born in places that can benefit themselves and others. Furthermore, taking birth by the power of aspiration, that is: Bodhisattvas who have entered the first and second grounds, by the power of aspiration, wherever they do the work of sentient beings in the realms of gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hells, they are born there as they have aspired. During times of great famine, in order to eliminate the hunger and thirst of sentient beings, they take the bodies of fish and elephants, etc., and satisfy sentient beings with their own flesh. And during the intermediate kalpas of disease, etc., in order to cure the diseases of those beings, they take the bodies of sentient beings, and by eating their flesh, they are liberated from disease. And becoming accomplished in mantra, and becoming the body of a great physician, thereby pacifying the various diseases of sentient beings, etc., holding various births. As it is said in the Sutra Revealing the Secret of the Tathagata's Body, etc. Bodhisattvas from the third to the seventh grounds hold birth by samadhi, that is: Their mind's samadhi is very easy to use, even if they have attained the four dhyanas, they will not be born in the form realm as a result, but will be born in the desire realm. Wherever they think, they hold birth by samadhi. Bodhisattvas who abide on the eighth, ninth, and tenth grounds
