As the sons of the Victorious Ones said, "These three realms are only mind." Thus, all phenomena are merely appearances in the mind, and therefore, they are established as being only consciousness. The suchness of abiding is the samsaric dharmas that constantly abide in the nature of the three sufferings. The suchness of wrongly establishing is the truth of the origin, which is characterized by karma and afflictions, because it wrongly establishes the nature of suffering. The suchness of complete purification is the truth of cessation, because it completely purifies the faults of suffering and origin. The suchness of rightly establishing is the truth of the path, because it rightly establishes the truth of cessation. All sentient beings are the same and equal through the three: entering, abiding, and wrongly establishing. All conditioned and unconditioned dharmas are the same and equal through the two characteristics of other-dependence and perfect establishment from the suchness of characteristics. The suchness of consciousness is also included in the category of other-dependence. In the Sutra Unraveling the Intent, the suchness of characteristics is said to be only the two selflessnesses, and thus it is perfectly established. The enlightenment of the three, hearers, solitary realizers, and Buddhas, is the same and equal through the suchness of complete purification, because they are the same only in obtaining the truth of cessation. Rightly establishing makes all dharmas of hearing, contemplating, and meditating on the meaning of truth the same and equal. Thus, it is said in the Sutra Unraveling the Intent in that way. Thus, entering and abiding in samsara is the truth of suffering, which possesses the four aspects of impermanence, etc. Wrongly establishing is the truth of the origin, which possesses the four aspects of origin, arising, etc. The nature of perfect establishment is the truth of cessation, which is free from adventitious stains and possesses the four aspects of cessation, peace, etc. The suchness of rightly establishing is the truth of the path, which possesses the four aspects of the path, reason, etc., and is the four truths. Consciousness is the eight aggregates of consciousness. The impure other-dependence in this is the suffering of the part that abides in samsara by relying on the imputed and in the manner of the arising of dependent origination. The part of entering, wrongly establishing, belongs to the origin. Relying on the perfectly established, the path

Because the practice of pure other-dependent nature belongs to true practice, the Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya summarizes the suchness of consciousness-only as pariniṣpanna. The suchness pariniṣpanna, which is free from adventitious defilements, is nirodha-satya. Although neither the root text nor the commentary mentions it here, the five dharmas are also divided from the three natures. The five dharmas are name, reason, discrimination, suchness, and correct knowledge. Name is the imputation of names such as pillar and vase, and the grasping of that as that, which is parikalpita. Reason is the appearance of the other-dependent as the object-apprehending part, such as abdominal distension, which appears as the aspect of that dharma, or appears as the sign or reason for establishing the name. Discrimination is the eight aggregates of consciousness that appear as the subject-apprehending part. Suchness is the unchanging pariniṣpanna. Correct knowledge is the non-erroneous pariniṣpanna that has suchness as its object, that is, establishing the name of the object on the subject, because the place and appearance are consistent. Thus, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra it says: The five dharmas, the three natures, the eight aggregates of consciousness, and the two selflessnesses, encompass all the Mahāyāna. As it is said, these are the great general principles of the Dharma. The establishment of reason and vehicle is successively four types and three types, as briefly shown. The four reasons are: the reason of action is knowing which cause produces which effect; the reason of dependence is knowing which effect depends on which cause. Like the heat of fire and the wetness of water are the conventional nature of phenomena, and all phenomena are emptiness is the ultimate nature of phenomena. The reason for establishing validity is measuring in accordance with the reality of things by means of perception and inference. Among them, the reason of action and the reason of dependence are: in the stage of aspiration, properly attending to the meaning of the two selflessnesses leads to the true view of seeing the truth of the nature of phenomena on the path of seeing, thus having a result, and the true view of the path of seeing has the result of liberation and nirvāṇa, these are the action of those causes producing those effects, and those effects depending on their respective causes.
