Hoping and desiring to decline and diminish, hoping and desiring that sentient beings who have not generated faith will generate it, that those who have generated it will abide in virtue, and that those who practice virtue will be perfected. Hoping and desiring that from obtaining the first bhumi, how to obtain the second bhumi, up to the tenth bhumi, thus the ten bhumis become more and more excellent from above, and hoping and desiring to obtain unsurpassed enlightenment after surpassing the ten bhumis. Other than these five hopes, not generating even a little hope for worldly perfections and the path and fruit of shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, this is the merit of the hope of aspiration. Seventh, the merit of not wasting effort is: Shravakas and pratyekabuddhas enter only for their own benefit, and do not benefit others, so it is wasted. Worldly people initiate practice with hope, but mostly there is no result, so it becomes wasted. However, bodhisattvas have hopes that are not inverted and are complete, so whatever they do is accomplished as desired, and the merit of not wasting is: the four kinds of practice are not wasted. If one is afraid of the profound and vast Mahayana Dharma, then that bodhisattva's practice on the Mahayana will be wasted. However, bodhisattvas abandon fear of the profound and vast Mahayana Dharma, and also dispel the fear of others, so practice on the Mahayana is not wasted. If one generates the mind for worldly perfections and the path and fruit of shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, then the practice of the Mahayana will be wasted. However, bodhisattvas do not generate the mind in that way, but generate the mind purely for themselves and all sentient beings to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Because one does not regress from generating the mind of enlightenment purely, practice is not wasted. Even if one generates the mind of enlightenment, but because one does not understand the methods for accomplishing enlightenment, etc., one may fall into doubt and regress from the mind of enlightenment, which could be wasted. However, bodhisattvas cut off doubts about the Mahayana path and fruit, so practice is not wasted. If, as taught by the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, the instructions on the bhumis, paramitas, and shamatha-vipashyana yoga
