Because they will abandon it, they keep it secret from those sentient beings and do not show it, just as in the world, relatives and kin conceal news so that the lives and positions of other relatives will not be harmed. Furthermore, if someone falls away from the three trainings, they rebuke them, saying, "This of yours is not good," and point out their faults, just as relatives rebuke and prevent their own relatives from doing things that should not be done. If they see sentient beings endowed with the perfect qualities of the three trainings, they praise them and make them happy, and do not abandon those qualities, just as relatives rejoice and praise when their relatives have done good deeds. In order to make sentient beings understand the noble path, they bestow upon them the essential instructions that are the means to that end, just as relatives give advice and help their own relatives in internal and external affairs. For the temptations of desirable qualities and unwholesome friends, etc., which obstruct the path of sentient beings, and the works of demons and devils, they reveal, "This is this, that is that," just as relatives protect other relatives from enemies, imprisonment, thieves, fire, floods, and other disasters. Through these five actions, the bodhisattvas are like relatives to sentient beings. Bodhisattvas, for the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, truly know what is meaningful and meaningless, that is, with regard to the two aspects of complete defilement, which are encompassed by suffering, and purification, which is encompassed by cessation and the path, those who can understand without confusing their own minds, and teach sentient beings in this way, are like friends in the world who understand the beneficial and unbeneficial things of other friends, and tell other friends what they themselves have understood. Giving all the happiness of worldly perfections, such as Brahma, Ishvara, wheel-turning kings, etc., and non-worldly perfections, up to the happiness of the state of Buddhahood, to sentient beings, is like friends giving things to other friends that are of temporary and long-term benefit to their lives and positions.

Just like that. To abide constantly without weariness for the sake of sentient beings is like a friend not being weary of doing things for a friend. Bodhisattvas, in doing things for sentient beings, are never swayed or deterred by demons, asceticism, etc., just as a trustworthy friend cannot be separated by slander, etc., and whose friendship is always unwavering. Bodhisattvas always wish that all sentient beings benefit from transcendent qualities and be happy with worldly qualities, and they never waver from this, just as a friend never abandons the wish that another friend always benefits in the long run and is happy in the present. Thus, through these five actions, the sons of the Buddhas are like intimate friends in the hearts of all sentient beings. Bodhisattvas are always diligent and unremitting in maturing those sentient beings who should be matured, just as servants in the world who listen to instructions diligently and without laziness engage in the affairs of their master. To speak to sentient beings the correct path of completely emerging from all suffering without error is like good servants truthfully telling their master what they have seen and heard. Bodhisattvas are able to endure the various harms done by sentient beings, and the perverse actions of doing good but receiving harm in return, just as servants endure being beaten and scolded with harsh words by their master, and accept his words. To bestow both worldly and transcendent perfections upon sentient beings is like servants fulfilling and increasing what their master has commanded. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas are skilled in perfecting the accumulation of merit and wisdom as a means for sentient beings to obtain worldly and transcendent perfections, just as good servants are skilled in quickly accomplishing the various tasks that their master has commanded. Thus, through these five actions of servants, the sons of the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas, are like servants to all sentient beings. Those Bodhisattvas who have themselves obtained the forbearance of non-arising dharma on the eighth ground, and who wish that all sentient beings obtain the forbearance of non-arising dharma.
