I, those with faith, as well as those who follow faith, those who follow dharma, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, Buddhas, and the distinctions among these, such as entering the four fruits, attaining the first bhumi, etc., if not indicated by the various names of individuals, one would not be able to distinguish the differences between this dharma and that dharma. Therefore, it should be understood that it is indicated by the names of individuals associated with the names of dharmas that distinguish the differences in the continuum of the five aggregates, primarily the consciousness aggregate. If, as such, the Bhagavan indicates the various names of individuals, thereby indicating that the individual exists substantially, then that word would generate the view of self. However, the view of self does not need to be generated, because all sentient beings inherently possess the view of self. Although the view of self has existed since beginningless time, it is not the case that one indicates the substantial existence of the individual for the sake of familiarizing oneself with the self, thinking that if one focuses on and meditates on the self for the sake of purifying that self, one will see the self and attain liberation. This is because familiarizing oneself with the self has been occurring since beginningless time, and although samsaric beings have been familiarizing themselves with it for so long, they will not attain liberation thereby. Moreover, it is the very root that binds one to samsara. Therefore, it is not permissible for the Bhagavan to indicate the name of the individual for the sake of both the view of a substantially existing self and the meditation on the self. Why would one speak of the substantial existence of the individual, since there is no need? If the view of self were something generated in sentient beings by the Buddha, then that view of self would liberate all effortlessly, or if it were not generated but was something prevented by the Buddha, then those with the view of self would have no liberation, and there is no possibility other than these two. If there were definitely something substantially existing called an individual or a self, then all sentient beings who view it in that way would not be mistaken, and therefore they should be liberated effortlessly from the path from the beginning. However, since no one is liberated until they realize the absence of self, the view of a substantially existing self is a reversed bondage, and therefore it is something to be refuted, not established and generated. If the self were inherently existent, then no one could refute it through reasoning. Since that unrefuted self exists, no one could turn away from grasping at the self. As long as there is grasping at the self, there will be grasping at self and what belongs to self.
