In terms of their own nature, they are different. Fire has the characteristics of burning and being hot, while wood does not have the characteristics of being hot and burning, but rather of being hard and suitable for various uses, thus their natures are different. In the world, too, these two are seen as different; there is wood without fire, and flames are far apart without wood. Fire is also seen from rubbing iron and stone, etc. From the perspective of treatises, fire is one of the four elements, while wood is transformed from the elements, solidified by water, hardened by earth, and mainly composed of the element of wind's movement. Therefore, it is not permissible to say that wood is like fire, both one and different, because they are two different entities of matter. Now, refuting the self as asserted by externalist Tirthikas: The Tirthikas say: There is a self, that is, the one who sees forms, similarly, the one who hears sounds, the one who smells odors, the one who tastes flavors, the one who feels tactile sensations, and the one who distinguishes dharmas, that is the self. Why is there no self who performs virtuous and non-virtuous actions, who enjoys the ripening of karma or the enjoyment of objects, and who is liberated from the three bonds of courage, dust, and darkness that bind sentient beings? That is not so, even without a self, there can be someone from the seer to the liberator, but the self does not do anything, such as seeing. How does it not do? Is the self, as a companion to the senses and objects, a condition without which seeing, etc., cannot arise, or is it a master or lord who, through the power of the self, urges the senses and other conditions, and then performs seeing, etc.? It is not the first case, because if there are two conditions, such as the eye and other senses, and forms and other objects, then relying on them, the six consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, can arise. No other condition is needed for this, and it has not been observed that it is produced by another condition that is not these two, therefore the self is not the cause of the arising of that consciousness, because only those two can generate consciousness without diminishing attention, and no other cause, the self, is needed, therefore such a cause is meaningless. For example, just as wood does not need water to generate fire.

Therefore, since consciousnesses are referred to as observers, etc., from the eye consciousness being the one who sees form, up to the liberator, it is because of this. I do not change from the observer to the liberator, because apart from consciousness itself, the self as the observer, etc., and the liberator are not found. Secondly, if it is said that seeing, etc., which arises from the aggregation of object, faculty, and consciousness, is also due to my power, and if there were no self, it would not be so. If that self were such a master who has the power to control desires in this way and has become independent, then the attainment of happiness would not become impermanent, but it would be reasonable to always be happy, but it is not so. It would also be reasonable that unwanted suffering would never occur, but since there is no sentient being who does not lose happiness and does not experience suffering, it should be known that the self is not independent. The meeting of the senses and objects also occurs in various ways, desired and undesired, due to the power of karma, and various kinds of happiness and suffering arise due to the power of the aggregation of conditions, but not by my will or blessing, so it should be understood that the self does not change from the observer to the liberator. There are other faults in asserting the existence of a self. If the self exists as a substance, then it must be proven that the function and characteristics of that self are such and such. For example, the function of the eye faculty and eye consciousness is to perform the act of seeing form. The form of the eye faculty is clear, and the eye consciousness is knowing blue, etc., just as it is necessary to state the function and characteristics of that self. Since that self is not a substance, it cannot be perceived by valid cognition like the son of a barren woman or the horns of a rabbit, so its function and characteristics cannot be truly stated. To state the function and characteristics of the aggregates as its dharma is a perverse view, which is subject to hundreds of logical harms, so there is the fault of taking on effort in vain. There are other faults as well. If there were a self of a person, then the Buddha must have seen it, because the Buddha has comprehended all knowable things. The Buddha saw the self of a person, and therefore said that there are ordinary persons and noble persons.
