Although it is said that the self exists as a substance, it is neither one with the aggregates nor different from them, therefore it is considered impossible to say whether it is permanent or impermanent, etc. Therefore, in order to show that it is not in accordance with their views, the so-called "person" and "self" refer to the fact that they exist only by being nominally designated in dependence on the five aggregates, and this should be said. Considering this, the Blessed One also conformed to the world, and from ordinary beings to Buddhas, he taught and spoke by means of the nominal designation of a person's name, but the self and the person do not exist as a substance or in ultimate truth or by their own nature. Thus, by existing through designation, and by showing that self-nature is not substantial, the faults of both not even being merely nominally designated and the self existing by its own nature are avoided. If asked, how is it shown that the self is not a substance? If the self were a substance, it would have to be perceived by either direct perception or inference, but since it is not perceived by valid cognition, it is established as not being a substance. How can it be said that none of my six faculties, such as the eye, and consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, can be directly perceived? Others say that although the self is not perceived by the five faculties and five consciousnesses, such as the eye and eye consciousness, it cannot be established as non-existent by that alone, just as the mind and mental factors that are not perceived by the five sense consciousnesses are perceived by the mind consciousness and are considered to exist. Similarly, those who believe in the existence of the self say that the self exists because it is perceived by the mind. The Blessed One also said, "In this very life, one clings to and designates as self," thus he spoke of perceiving the self. To this statement, it is to be said that the perception of the self by those who believe in the existence of the self is inverted, because perceiving the non-existent as existent is a mistake, like mistaking a rope for a snake, and it is not that the mind consciousness directly sees and perceives it. The Blessed One did not say that the self exists as a substance and that consciousness perceives it as valid cognition, but rather that in the absence of a self, one regards it as a self, and perceives it with consciousness, and then also nominally designates it as self in language. Those who assert the existence of the self say: It is not reasonable for the intellect to perceive something that does not exist at all, but because all sentient beings perceive the self with their intellect.

If asked, how does this inverted view of clinging to self manifest? If clinging to self were not an inverted view, then it should be without fault. However, this view of self is of the nature of fault, is the essence of complete affliction, and is the cause of all other afflictions, therefore it manifests as an inverted view. That is to say, this clinging to self is a distinction of view among the six root afflictions, namely the view of the aggregates of destruction. From this, all afflictions such as attachment increase, and due to its power, the cycle of existence, which is of the nature of various sufferings, is accomplished. Therefore, there is fault in this, so it is an inverted clinging. Others say: This view of clinging to self, although it is characterized by complete affliction, is not an inverted view. If it is not an inverted view, then it should not become completely afflicted. Whatever is completely afflicted is an inverted view, such as clinging to permanence and purity. Whatever is without complete affliction, then there is no inverted view for it, such as clinging to impermanence and impurity. Therefore, inverted views, namely perceiving impurity as purity, suffering as happiness, impermanence as permanence, and selflessness as self, can be eliminated by the path of realizing impurity, suffering, impermanence, and selflessness, thereby attaining pure qualities and achieving complete purification, just as when the inverted view caused by the fault of cataracts disappears, the eyes are without fault. Furthermore, those who assert self say: You who assert that persons are nominally existent should not impute on something without a basis, so on what do you rely to impute a person? The answer is: Imputing a person is not because the person is substantially existent, so that we impute a person in that way, but merely imputing a person on the five aggregates of appropriation. The sutra also says: Whether it is a renunciate or a brahmin, whoever imputes 'I' or 'mine,' those are merely imputing 'I' or 'mine' on the five aggregates of appropriation. If asked, is that imputed person and the basis of imputation, the five aggregates, said to be one or different? The answer is: To avoid two faults, etc., a verse is spoken. According to the system that asserts that persons are substantially existent, the person and the aggregates must be accepted as either one or different. Because a substantially existent thing is either different from other substantially existent things, or not other than its own substance.
