If they say, 'Because what was seen before is not seen later in any place, it cannot be said that they are not momentary. Pillars, vases, houses, people, stones, etc., even if left for a year or a month, do not become smaller, and what was seen before remains the same later, so we have not seen them destroyed in an instant.' Then, ask them again, 'Pillars, vases, etc., initially appear, but in the middle, due to the power of conditions, their color, shape, etc., change from what they were before, and finally, when they meet with conditions, why is there no actual destruction? Since this is the case, why are these things not momentary like candles?' They reply, 'Candles and other conditioned things like pillars and vases have different characteristics. Candles are seen as having the characteristic of producing heat and light, being unstable, and arising and ceasing in an instant. Other things like pillars and vases, from the time they arise until a certain period, have the function of supporting and holding water, etc., so they are seen as having the characteristic of being hard and stable, so the two are not the same.' To this, it should be pointed out that conditioned things are only different in their own characteristics, which is established in both self and other. However, this does not prove that conditioned things are not of the nature of momentary impermanence. The reason is that there are two kinds of different characteristics: different nature and different function. Different nature is like the nature of fire being hot and the nature of water being wet. Different function is that candles, etc., arise and cease in each moment, while other conditioned things like vases arise and remain for a certain period before finally being destroyed, which is clearly the different function that you desire. Although candles and vases, etc., have different natures, this does not prove that they are different in their function of momentary arising and ceasing. Moreover, you have already admitted that candles are momentary, and using this as an example, you can prove that other conditioned things like vases are also momentary. This example is like using a candle to prove a candle, or using a cow to prove a cow. Things of the same nature cannot be used as examples, but other things of different natures, whose function or the dharma to be proven is the same, such as the sun being like fire.

Tsa'o! Just as it is said that a cow is not like a yak, although vases and the like and the self-characteristics of lamps are different in appearance, it can be proven that there is no difference in the general characteristic of being momentary impermanence. It is impossible that some things are destroyed in an instant simply because they have different appearances, while others remain for a while and then are destroyed later. Because there is no difference in the fact that all conditioned phenomena are destroyed in an instant. Furthermore, according to the wishes of you people, the core of the lamp is not momentary but exists, and then it produces a series of momentary flames; pillars, vases, and the like are not momentary but exist in their own essence, then in the times of last year, this year, next year, etc., different results such as pouring water and supporting will not be produced, you think. I ask you this: When a person rides a horse to another place, is it possible that the horse has not gone anywhere but remains there, while the person has gone to another place? They say: Such a thing is impossible in the world, we do not admit it. The person and the horse go to another place together. In response to this, it is said: If, as you believe, the core of the lamp is not momentary but exists, and then produces the flame; the vases and the like exist without moving, and then do things like pouring water; the senses such as the eyes do not move from their original state, and then produce eye consciousness and the like, this is also unreasonable, because the cause has not moved, but a new result is produced. Because you admit that the cause of these results is those that do not move, how is this different from the horse being here while the person riding it goes to another place? The core of the lamp is also constantly moistened by oil, consumed by the flame, gradually exhausted and extinguished, and when the oil is exhausted, the lamp goes out and the wick turns to ashes. If the wick does not have arising and ceasing, but can produce the lamp, then the wick will never be extinguished, and the lamp will never be extinguished either. But this is not the case, so both cause and effect are momentary. Similarly, the function of pillars, vases, and the like, and the arising of consciousness from the senses, all of these are like the lamp, know that both cause and effect are momentary. After saying this, they say: If all conditioned phenomena are momentary, what will happen?
