Just as a vase is different from the material of felt, and the same as the material of the vase itself. For a designated person, there is no real entity other than the skandhas, and they are different only in terms of the basis of designation and the designation itself, so they are not one either. As will be explained, due to the two faults, this self cannot be said to be one with or different from the skandhas, that is, the person or self is not one with the skandhas, nor is it other or different. The two faults are: if the skandhas and the self are one, then the five skandhas would become the self, and if the self is other than the skandhas, then the self would become a real entity that is different from the skandhas. If that were the case, what fault would there be? If the skandhas are the self, then like the skandhas, the self would become multiple and impermanent, or like the self, the five skandhas would also become one and permanent. If it is different from the skandhas, then it would become something that can be distinguished from the skandhas, and the accumulation of karma by the five skandhas and the experience of the results of happiness and suffering would become unrelated to the self. The Vaibhashika school, which advocates the self, although they regard the Buddha as the teacher, they contradict the teacher's teaching of no-self and assert that the self exists as a real entity, which is refuted: If the self exists as a real entity, and cannot be said to be one with or different from the five skandhas, nor can it be said to be permanent or impermanent, then the reason or necessity for establishing this assertion must also be stated, it cannot be said without necessity or reason. One cannot establish one's own tenets merely with the words "like this." Thus it is refuted. They say: The self and the skandhas are not one, because even if the previous skandhas cease, the self still needs to exist in samsara. The self and the skandhas are also not different, because no agent who accumulates karma and experiences the ripening results is found other than the skandhas. It is also not permanent, because it changes in different and other births. Nor is the self impermanent, because from beginningless time to the end, the self is one, and there is no birth and cessation of multiple selves. Therefore, in order to be the basis of karma and its results, it must be admitted that the real self cannot be said to be one with or different from the skandhas, etc. For example, fire and wood are not one, because wood alone cannot perform the act of burning, and fire cannot perform the act of wood.

and to be able to function. Moreover, it is not different, just as firewood becomes fire, and apart from firewood becoming fire, no other fire can be identified. If that is the case, since you have already acknowledged both the self and the aggregates as truly existent, then saying that these two are neither one nor different is not permissible. This is merely speaking carelessly without any need or reason to fulfill one's own intention, and is therefore unreasonable. How is it unreasonable? Just as both a pillar and a vase are each acknowledged as truly existent, if it is said that the pillar-vase is not one, then the very statement establishes them as different, so it is not permissible to then say that the pillar-vase is also not different. Once the self and the aggregates are both acknowledged as existent, it is reasonable to acknowledge that the self and the aggregates are not one. Saying that they are different or not different is unnecessary and would be highly contradictory to one's own assertion, just like saying that the pillar-vase is not different. If one is concerned that acknowledging them as different would lead to the fault of not being able to identify a self that is the agent and experiencer of karmic results apart from the aggregates, and therefore acknowledges them as not different, then the fault of acknowledging the self and the aggregates as not different and as one will not exceed what was said earlier. If one is concerned about that fault and does not acknowledge them as one either, then by acknowledging them as different, one's own assertion of them being one is immediately destroyed. Not only is there no need to speak contradictorily, but the fault is very great. Therefore, if one must consider the self as truly existent, then one should consider it as either one or different, for a truly existent entity that is neither one nor different does not exist in the world, nor is it taught in the scriptures, nor can it be established by reasoning. Therefore, the fact that acknowledging the self and the aggregates as either one or different leads to some fault is due to the fact that the self is not truly existent but merely imputed, as was said earlier. Therefore, because one considers the self as merely imputed, it is not permissible to speak of it as one or different. Without understanding this, while still considering the self as truly existent, to say that it is not permissible to speak of it as one or different, nor is it permissible to speak of it as permanent or impermanent, is merely contradictory speech and does not fulfill the need to serve as a basis for cause and effect. Using the example of fire and firewood not being one or different is inappropriate, for fire and firewood are
