How the very nature of reality is comprehended through view, and how it is established as being such and such, is correct discernment. How does it establish it? The meaning of reality, such and such, indicated by names, sentences, and letters in treatises such as the Sutra Pitaka, is called the established Dharma, because it is established by explaining the meaning of reality. Therefore, to realize the meaning of that which is established as it is by oneself, and to explain it to others in that way, and to enter through the gate of distinguishing the meaning of the established words without error, is correct discernment. The three actions of speech, actions, and livelihood are completely pure, and relying on correct effort in two countless eons is to meditate as an antidote to the obscuration of knowledge. Similarly, correct mindfulness is to meditate as an antidote to the obscuration of the path. When meditating on the path of tranquility and insight, if the obscurations of that path, sinking and excitement, arise, then, as mentioned above, with the power of mindfulness, the three characteristics of tranquility, the characteristic of grasping, and the characteristic of equanimity, clarify those obscurations. Correct samadhi is to meditate as an antidote to the obscurations of the special qualities such as the six superknowledges mentioned in the chapter on miraculous powers. Secondly, the three verses distinguishing tranquility and insight are: truly abiding, etc. Truly abiding refers to relying on the four formless absorptions of the form realm, since there is no Dharma other than mind, therefore, only in mind, the mind is placed in one-pointedness, which is tranquility. Relying on that tranquility, knowing the meaning of the reality of all Dharmas without error, in order to skillfully distinguish Dharmas, non-discrimination is insight. Thus, the characteristics of tranquility and insight of the Great Vehicle are briefly explained. Explaining the distinction between tranquility and insight: these two, tranquility and insight, pervade the accomplishment of qualities and all meditations, that is, meditating on the aspects of enlightenment, and desiring to attain dhyana and samadhi, and desiring to attain superknowledges, etc., are indispensable for all of them, so they pervade everything.

It is called 'going everywhere,' which means that the basis of all practices is these two. As for 'one part,' practicing the four formless absorptions has more of the component of calm abiding and less of the component of insight, so it is one part. The first, second, and third dhyanas of the form realm have more of the component of insight and less of the component of calm abiding, so that is also one aspect or one part. As for 'not one part,' calm abiding and insight are combined, without much or little distinction, not being on the side of one part, which is when practicing the fourth dhyana of the form realm. Practicing calm abiding and insight with faith is considered the cause for attaining the first bhumi. The calm abiding and insight at the time of the first bhumi are called the calm abiding and insight of extreme realization, because at that time, one realizes that everything in the dharma realm goes everywhere; the calm abiding and insight from the second to the sixth bhumi are called the calm abiding and insight of definite departure, because one gradually abandons all signs and definitely departs from signlessness in the seventh bhumi; the calm abiding and insight at the time of the seventh bhumi are called the calm abiding and insight of signlessness, because at that time, one does not make distinctions of various signs for the sutras and other various dharmas, but practices everything as signless and of one taste. Practicing calm abiding and insight at the time of the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhumis is called the calm abiding and insight of non-effort, because one abides in calm abiding and insight that is effortlessly and naturally accomplished; practicing calm abiding and insight in those three pure bhumis is called the complete purification of the Buddha field, and the complete purification of the two obscurations along with their habitual tendencies, attaining the Buddha bhumi, so it is called complete purification. Thus, the yoga of calm abiding and insight that relies on the bhumis and between the bhumis is universally practiced from faith to the tenth bhumi, which accomplishes all the benefits of oneself and others, and each lower bhumi accomplishes all the qualities of the higher bhumi. Third, regarding the branches that make the practice special, skillful means that accomplish great benefits with little effort and without deception, and the dharani that does not forget the dharmas previously held, and the aspiration to obtain future qualities.
