Because there is no merit corresponding to the part of liberation that has been achieved, nirvana cannot be attained even after many kalpas, so it is called without lineage. Also, some people have little or small roots of virtue corresponding to the part of liberation, but at that time they do not have any ability to accomplish the powerful merits of the accumulation of merit and wisdom and superior qualities, which is called without lineage. Like this, for all these four kinds of people, even if they have the Mahayana lineage, they will be controlled by strong adverse conditions, and because the cause is weak and the lineage is not awakened, they will not be able to attain enlightenment for a long time before they obtain other temporary benefits, so the word "without" is added to the word "inferior" and called without lineage. The so-called "separated from cause" is different from the previous four, referring to the complete lack of cause for obtaining liberation, so it is called without lineage. Third, summarizing the meaning by praising the supreme lineage: By expounding the Dharma of emptiness, it is profound, and because it expounds the grounds, paramitas, powers, and fearlessness, it is vast. Both of these are Dharmas expounded for the benefit of other sentient beings. For the Mahayana, even if one does not understand its meaning, merely hearing it will generate very great faith, and one will be able to endure the hardships of practicing the paramitas, and by accumulating the two accumulations with these causes, one will ultimately surpass the two fruits of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas of the world and beyond, and attain the supreme and perfect enlightenment. This is because the Bodhisattvas possess the qualities of the naturally abiding lineage, and it is caused by the flourishing lineage that arises from correctly practicing virtue. Like this, the qualities of powers and so on are as vast as trees and flowers, and are for the purpose of growing the supreme tree of unsurpassed enlightenment, and like the shade of a tree can calm the heat and make body and mind happy, it is for the purpose of enabling sentient beings to obtain the great bliss of non-leakage, and it is for the purpose of pacifying great suffering, and like the good fruits of a tree, it is for the purpose of ripening the fruits that benefit oneself and others. The supreme lineage is like a good foundation that is firm and uncorrupted.

It is the son! The explanation of the fourth chapter, the chapter on lineage, from the Great Vehicle Sutra Ornament is complete. Fifth Chapter: The Chapter on Generating the Mind of Enlightenment Third: In generating the mind of enlightenment, there are four aspects: the nature of generating the mind of enlightenment, its divisions, examples, and praise of its benefits. First, it possesses four greatnesses and focuses on the two benefits: through the gate of armor-like diligence, hearing, contemplating, and meditating on the Dharma of the Great Vehicle; being enthusiastic and not turning back from the hardships of practicing the path for countless eons for the sake of others is the greatness of enthusiasm; the diligence of application, like putting on armor, is the greatness of initiation; accomplishing the two benefits of oneself and others is the greatness of meaning; and attaining unsurpassed enlightenment is the greatness of the arising of the result. Thus, it possesses the four distinctions of qualities. Its nature is the mental event of the mind stream of a Bodhisattva. What does it think about or focus on when generating the mind of enlightenment? It thinks about and focuses on attaining great enlightenment, and it thinks about and focuses on benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings. Thus, focusing on the benefit of enlightenment and sentient beings is the mind that possesses two benefits, the mental event that arises in conjunction with the mind. That is called generating the mind of enlightenment. In short, for the sake of all sentient beings, I shall attain unsurpassed enlightenment, thinking in this way and vowing with aspiration. Second: The divisions of generating the mind of enlightenment include three types: divisions based on the stages of the grounds, divisions based on roots, etc., and divisions based on attainment through convention and nature. First, generating the mind of enlightenment occurs in the stages of the grounds of aspiration and practice, etc. Thus, generating the mind of enlightenment in the path of accumulation and preparation in the ground of aspiration and practice is based solely on initial aspiration, and therefore it is called the mind of enlightenment arising from aspiration. In the stages of the first to seventh grounds, it is called the mind of enlightenment of pure higher intention, because one has attained the mind of equality between oneself and others, and therefore the wisdom that makes no distinction between the benefit of oneself and others is matured, hence it is called higher intention, and because it is free from the defilement of grasping and being grasped, it is called pure. In the stage from the eighth to tenth grounds, it is called the mind of enlightenment of complete maturation, that is, in that ground.
