is the cause, because depending on it, the paths and fruits arise. The definition of lineage is: Gotra Lineage) is a contraction of the sounds of guna (藏文:གུ་ཎ་,梵文天城体:गुण,梵文罗马拟音:guna,汉语字面意思:quality) quality and tara (藏文:ཏར་,梵文天城体:तर,梵文罗马拟音:tara,汉语字面意思:deliverance) deliverance. It should be understood to mean 'delivering qualities'. Because this lineage, from the generation of bodhicitta to the stages of faith and practice and the ten bhumis, ultimately perfects and delivers up to the qualities of the Buddha's ground. Fourth, the signs or characteristics of lineage are very numerous, but in short, whoever has these four signs is known to be of the Mahayana lineage, like fire. What are they? Before engaging in or entering the Mahayana, that is, before generating the supreme bodhicitta, that person spontaneously generates compassion upon seeing the suffering of sentient beings; upon merely hearing the profound and vast Dharma of the Mahayana, even without understanding its meaning, faith arises naturally; even upon hearing of the hardships practiced for the benefit of others, one does not become discouraged thinking, "How could I be capable of this?" but rather endures with a mind of wonder; and one naturally rejoices in and delights in practicing the virtues of the six paramitas. This is definitely explained as a sign of the Mahayana lineage, and those who do not possess that lineage have the opposite nature. Fifth, the classification of lineages is as follows: The definite lineage, which is definitely one of the three, Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva, attains its own enlightenment no matter what, and cannot attain another enlightenment, just like a stone containing one of the minerals such as gold or silver. The indefinite lineage is one that can be transformed into the lineage of whichever of the three vehicles it encounters, just like some stone minerals that can be transformed into gold, silver, or copper through smelting and the special effects of medicine. Thus, the definite lineage is said not to be robbed by conditions, because even if a virtuous friend teaches other dharmas, it is by the power of one's own lineage that one attains one's own enlightenment, and one does not accept another enlightenment. The indefinite lineages are indeed robbed by conditions, just as white cloth absorbs whatever color it encounters, such as red. Whichever virtuous friend one encounters, one obtains the fruit of the path taught by that friend. Thus, in brief

Thus, the divisions of lineage are these four types. Generally, although it is like that, here, one should take the two: those with a lineage determined for the Great Vehicle and those who, due to uncertain circumstances, enter the Great Vehicle, because this is the occasion for explaining the Great Vehicle lineage. Sixth, the faults of lineage, which means that although one has a lineage, the obstacles or faults that prevent one from engaging in virtuous conduct are: being accustomed to afflictions such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance for a long time; being under the influence of evil friends and engaging in non-virtue; being impoverished in resources and not engaging in virtue but committing evil deeds; and being under the control of others, such as kings, lords, thieves, etc., and not having the freedom to not commit evil and to do good. In short, the faults of lineage should be known as four types. Seventh, the advantages or benefits of the Great Vehicle lineage are: those with the lineage of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and those without the lineage of liberation, if they commit strong sins such as the five inexpiable sins, they are born immediately after death in the hells of sentient beings; but even if those with the Bodhisattva lineage commit actions such as the five inexpiable sins, they will go to bad destinies and experience the fruits of sin only after a long period of time in the distant future, separated by eons or many years, and will not ripen as quickly as other lineages, as explained in the commentaries. The reason for this is also that the power of the Great Vehicle lineage, even if one engages in non-virtue, one will have shame and regret, etc., and will not be pleased with it, etc., so unlike other sentient beings, the maturation of non-virtue is also difficult to experience quickly. Even when born in a bad destiny, other sentient beings must remain in hells, etc., until their lifespan is exhausted, but those with the Bodhisattva lineage do not have to stay that long and can quickly be liberated, and even in that state of bad destiny, they can be liberated by experiencing only a small amount of suffering. For example, King Ajatashatru, having killed his father, an adherent of the stream, the maturation of the inexpiable action was only experienced in hell for the time it takes to flick a silk cloth. Even when experiencing suffering in a bad destiny, due to the power of karma, sentient beings involuntarily experience suffering and become weary, and therefore great compassion arises for other sentient beings like myself, and thus...
