If one sees that someone can accomplish that, one will generate the desire to obtain faith, or one will have faith in the four dharmas, namely: believing in the law of karma, not committing sins even for the sake of life; believing in the conduct of bodhisattvas, not desiring other vehicles; believing in the emptiness of the profound nature of the three doors of liberation, which is the selflessness of dependent arising, thereby destroying the habitual tendencies of all views; and believing in all the vast teachings of the Buddha, such as powers and fearlessness, practicing them without doubt or hesitation. These four are the roots of faith, as stated in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence. The dharma in which one has faith is accomplished by the root of diligence, which is the nature of the four right abandonments, and this is the root of diligence. The dharma accomplished by diligence should not be forgotten by mindfulness. Obtaining the four establishments of mindfulness is the root of mindfulness. Having obtained the samadhi of the four dhyanas and the four formless absorptions, and constantly focusing the mind one-pointedly on the dharma that has not been lost by the root of mindfulness, is the root of samadhi. Knowing the specific and general characteristics of the dharmas that have been focused one-pointedly by the root of samadhi, or knowing the four noble truths, is the root of wisdom. Having explained it in general, here, the basis, place, or object of the five roots is explained, namely: the object or basis of the root of faith is bodhi, which is the inexhaustible wisdom that is the result of the Great Vehicle, or the non-dual wisdom of the first ground, focusing on bodhi, thinking, "I must obtain it, become it, and accomplish it." The root of diligence focuses on the superior discipline characterized by the ground and the perfections, and the conduct of bodhisattvas encompassed by superior wisdom, accomplishing those practices with diligence. The root of mindfulness focuses on hearing the supreme Dharma of the Great Vehicle, remembering without forgetting how it was heard, how it was received, and how it was extensively determined by words. The root of samadhi, which is practice through aspiration, focuses on how to obtain the special calm abiding of the first ground.

The powerful one of wisdom, in order to know how to obtain the non-conceptual wisdom of insight on the first ground, therefore, it should be known that enlightenment and so on are the basis or object of faith and so on. Why are these five called powers? Because in accomplishing all the meanings of purification, they are established as powers because of their ability to be independent. Faith has power over enlightenment, diligence has power over the conduct of bodhisattvas, mindfulness has power over the vast Dharma, samadhi has power over tranquility, and wisdom has power over accomplishing the meaning of insight. Alternatively, the five powers can also accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Fifth, the five strengths are explained, namely, the strength of faith, the strength of diligence, the strength of mindfulness, the strength of samadhi, and the strength of wisdom. When the opposing factors of each cannot be overcome, they are called strengths. By the power of these five strengths of faith and so on in the stage of aspiration, one can enter the first ground of the noble ones. These increase from higher to higher, and although they can truly lead to the holy ground, they are still included in the ground of ordinary beings with all defilements because they have not yet been liberated from what is to be abandoned by seeing. What is the difference between power and strength? Although the five strengths are worldly, as long as disbelief, laziness, forgetfulness, distraction, and the delusion of perverted wisdom can overcome and obstruct them, they are called powers. When these opposing factors are weak and the antidotes of faith and so on cannot resist and overcome them, then faith and so on themselves are called strengths. Sixth, the seven branches of enlightenment are explained, namely, the mindfulness enlightenment branch, as well as the discrimination of Dharma, diligence, joy, tranquility, samadhi, and equanimity enlightenment branch. Mindfulness is on the side of tranquility, so by cultivating and experiencing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, those that have already appeared are not forgotten and are clear in the mind. Discrimination of Dharma is wisdom, which is on the side of insight. At the time of the path of seeing, all the Dharma to be abandoned
