Therefore. In the mindfulness placement of Bodhisattvas, in order to abandon the faults of the fourteen kinds of opposing factors of the support, etc., just mentioned, namely: the support is the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, and the opposing factor of listening, thinking, and meditating is not listening, not thinking, and not meditating on the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, which is a fault. Similarly, the opposing factor of the antidote, from the aspects of purity, happiness, permanence, and self of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, to the point where one cannot attain the ten Bhumis and the Buddha Bhumi, the opposing factor of attainment is known to be a fault. This briefly shows the meaning of truly abandoning. The detailed classification of truly abandoning is: Bodhisattvas, for the benefit of sentient beings, in this cycle of existence, Having taken the bodies of Brahma, Indra, Wheel-Turning Kings, etc., at the time of enjoying perfect enjoyment, in order not to be controlled by afflictions such as desire, and not to be defiled by them, they cultivate the four kinds of true abandonment. Similarly, in order to abandon the five obscurations of desire for sensual pleasures, malice, sleepiness, restlessness and regret, and doubt, they cultivate. Abandoning not attending to the meaning of the Great Vehicle, but attending to the fruits of the Lesser Vehicle and the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. In order to abandon the Dharmas that become obstacles when entering the first Bhumi of the Noble Ones, etc., from the Bhumi of Adhimukticarya. In order to abandon the faults that obstruct the attainment of the seventh Bhumi, which abides without characteristics, while abiding in the second to sixth Bhumis. In order to abandon the faults that become obstacles to obtaining prediction in the eighth Bhumi, they cultivate the four abandonments. In order to abandon the obscurations that become obstacles to obtaining the four analytical knowledges in the ninth Bhumi, and to mature sentient beings by teaching them the Dharma, and in order to abandon the obscurations that become obstacles to obtaining the empowerment of the vice-regent by the Tathagatas in the tenth Bhumi, they cultivate the four abandonments. In the three pure Bhumis of the eighth, ninth, and tenth Bhumis, in order to purify the Buddha-fields, they abandon the obscurations that become obstacles, They cultivate the four abandonments. Ultimately, they attain the eleventh Bhumi, the Buddha Bhumi.

In order to become such (a state), in order to eliminate the obscurations that become obstacles to obtaining it, one cultivates the four right abandonments, that is to say, wise Bodhisattvas from the stage of aspiration to the end of the ten bhumis, cultivate these four right abandonments as antidotes to the unfavorable aspects of the path. How does one cultivate them? As the sutra says, generate desire, exert effort, initiate diligence, hold the mind well, and truly abide well, cultivate as shown by these five words. First, desire is the basis of diligence, the remaining four are the nature of diligence. That is, for unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen, not causing them to arise, and abandoning those that have arisen, for wholesome dharmas that have not arisen, causing them to arise, and causing those that have arisen to increase, relying on the intention to do so, cultivating shamatha and vipassana yoga is effort or diligence. When cultivating shamatha and vipassana in this way, sometimes the favorable conditions for shamatha give rise to sinking and dullness, sometimes the favorable conditions for vipassana give rise to excitement and scattering, and sometimes there is neither of these and one abides as it is, therefore, one recognizes with mindfulness and awareness what has arisen, and then, the sign of shamatha, the sign of praise, and the sign of equanimity, these three are appropriately kept in mind, which is called cultivating with reason or the three signs, the three signs and the four actions are the meaning of initiating diligence. Through the three signs, one is good at holding the mind, and abides as it is without sinking or excitement, in that state one abides truly and well without moving. That is, when the mind sinks inward or becomes sleep and dullness, one keeps in mind the qualities of the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas, or the qualities of samadhi, etc., the sign of praise, and causes the mind to arise from sinking. Whenever the mind is drawn to desirable qualities or external objects and becomes excited and scattered, one thinks about the faults of samsara and the faults of distraction, calms the excited mind, and inwardly keeps in mind the sign of shamatha, which pacifies the mind's scattering to external objects. When the mind is free from sinking and excitement in this way, from then on it is the sign of equanimity.
