They engage in diligence without weariness in accomplishing the pāramitās and benefiting sentient beings. By dwelling in diligence, they accomplish samādhi, which prevents the mind from being distracted. Relying on equanimity, they accomplish the wisdom of vipaśyanā, which realizes the general and specific characteristics of all dharmas. Therefore, in accordance with the six pāramitās, the śrāvakas only meditate on the mere aspects of bodhipakṣa-dharmas, and they are unable to become accustomed to such six pāramitās for a long time. The distinction of following is that merely establishing mindfulness on the body and so on is something that worldly people and śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas also meditate on. However, the meditation of bodhisattvas is superior to that, and from their own position, they also teach worldly people and śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas how to meditate on mindfulness in accordance with their respective minds. This is the distinction of following all those to be tamed. The distinction of complete knowledge is that bodhisattvas know that the body appears like an illusion, but it is not established as such. Feelings are experienced like experiencing pleasure and pain in a dream, but there is nothing with its own characteristics in them. The nature of the mind is completely established as naturally luminous, like the sky. All defiled and purified dharmas are temporary, like clouds and dirt appearing in the sky, and like the sky becoming clear when they are gone. They know that they are not the nature of the mind, but appear temporarily due to conditions, like reflections. Therefore, completely knowing the nature of the body and so on is particularly excellent. The distinction of birth is that the śrāvakas' meditation on mindfulness is for the sake of averting birth in saṃsāra. Although bodhisattvas are not born due to the power of karma and afflictions that cling to saṃsāra, they intentionally take birth as Indra, Brahmā, cakravartin, and so on for the sake of sentient beings, possessing perfect bodies and enjoyments, and they act for the benefit of others, but they do not generate afflictions such as attachment. Even if they take birth as inferior ordinary beings and animals, they take birth without being discouraged, degenerated, or afflicted. This is a particularly excellent way of taking birth. The distinction of becoming a great measure is that bodhisattvas have sharp faculties by nature, and they also meditate on mindfulness for the sake of both themselves and others.

In order to meditate on the nature of selflessness of person and phenomena, one should meditate briefly in the state of ordinary beings. Although the meditation is small because one has not yet attained the noble stage, it is superior to the mindfulness meditation of hearers and solitary realizers, and becomes great. Being superior by means of the supreme aspect means that after attaining the eighth ground, the four mindfulnesses are completely meditated, and when they are spontaneously accomplished without effort, the meditation becomes supreme through the aspect of bodhisattvas being mixed with and nearly mixed with other bodhisattvas. If one eighth-ground bodhisattva meditates on the four mindfulnesses, then others on the other grounds also meditate, and if others meditate, then I also meditate, so it is called mixed and nearly mixed in that respect, because they are mixed into one meaning. Alternatively, the first moment of attaining the eighth ground from the seventh ground is called mixed, and from the second moment until one has not entered the ninth ground is called nearly mixed, according to the commentary. The difference in meditation is that when a bodhisattva meditates on the four mindfulnesses, it is superior to the mindfulness meditation of hearers and solitary realizers because it is fully grasped by great compassion that does not abandon all sentient beings, and by great wisdom that realizes both selflessnesses. The difference in perfectly accomplishing the result is that hearers and solitary realizers, by meditating on mindfulness, attain the four results such as stream-entry, and bodhisattvas, by meditating on the four mindfulnesses, attain the ten grounds, and by attaining the ground of Buddhahood as the result, it is superior. Secondly, the meditation on the four correct abandonments is shown in five verses. The four correct abandonments of steadfast bodhisattvas are not the same as those of other sentient beings, hearers, and solitary realizers, because they are meditated for the sake of all sentient beings, and the essence of what is to be meditated differs in mindfulness. The four correct abandonments are: not to generate unwholesome qualities that have not yet arisen, to abandon unwholesome qualities that have arisen, to generate wholesome qualities that have not yet arisen, and to increase wholesome qualities that have arisen. If you ask, what are these four correct abandonments meditated as an antidote to? The answer is: they are meditated as an antidote to the faults that are contrary to mindfulness.
