Steadfastness towards the supreme Bodhi: Thus, eight categories of steadfastness are explained. Again, the three divisions of steadfastness are: For the sake of unsurpassed Bodhi, practicing various immeasurable austerities is steadfastness in practicing austerities; for the benefit of others, with compassion, not abandoning samsara, fully accepting rebirth in various existences is steadfastness in consciously taking rebirth in samsara; at the time of being born in samsara, not being defiled by the faults of samsara, by afflictions, is steadfastness in being without afflictions. Thus, the arising of steadfastness in the continuum of a steadfast Bodhisattva is different from the steadfastness of worldly beings and Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and is considered the supreme among those who possess other steadfastness. Third is immutability. Just as the strength of the wings of butterflies and birds of prey, and the waves of the great ocean cannot shake Mount Meru, applying these three examples in order, steadfast Bodhisattvas are not disturbed or moved by unwholesome evil friends, various sufferings, and hearing the profound Dharma of emptiness and selflessness. Third is non-weariness, the non-weariness of a Bodhisattva is incomparable to the non-weariness of other Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Towards what is there no weariness? There is no weariness towards three bases or objects: not being satisfied with hearing the supreme Dharma from a virtuous friend is non-weariness towards hearing the Dharma or non-weariness towards completely seeking the Dharma. In countless eons, like producing fire from a rubbing stick, initiating great diligence is non-weariness towards the object of diligence; not being weary of accepting various kinds of suffering for the benefit of sentient beings is having no weariness towards the object of suffering. These explain the three objects or realms of non-weariness. The cause or source or basis of non-weariness is: relying on the shame and conscientiousness and steadfastness mentioned above, non-weariness arises. The nature or essence of non-weariness is: having an extremely strong desire for great Bodhi. Therefore, distinguishing the cause of non-weariness is that the non-weariness of those with wisdom, for those in the stages of the path, is in this way, with faith and conduct, equality of self and others.

Since the (non-retrogressive) mind has not been obtained, sadness sometimes arises, so there is no complete perfection of not being sad; in the seventh ground, sadness never arises, so it is completely perfect; in the three pure grounds, effortless and spontaneous accomplishment is extremely perfect, so it is considered to have three distinctions. Fourth, knowing the treatises: The steadfast Bodhisattva's knowing the treatises refers to knowing the five sciences, which is also called epistemology. The five sciences are as previously stated, namely inner science, and logic or epistemology, which is epistemology, which is also the study of cause or argument. There are also grammar or linguistics, craftsmanship, and medicine, these five, one should listen well from virtuous friends, Khenpos, and wise people, and gain certainty by contemplating their meaning, and then also teach others, because all knowable things are contained in the five sciences. Bodhisattvas are proficient in all knowable things, because they want to attain omniscience, so they engage in knowing the treatises in this way. Just knowing the five sciences, worldly people and Hearers and Solitary Realizers also have it, but, in terms of the six aspects such as the basis, the Bodhisattvas' knowing the treatises of the five sciences has a special excellence. What is that? First, the basis or object is the five sciences themselves, the Hearers, for the sake of their own liberation, mainly pursue a part of inner science, namely the selflessness of the person, and do not pay much attention to the meanings taught by all the Mahayana scriptures, let alone other sciences? Bodhisattvas, in order to pursue omniscience and accomplish the affairs of limitless sentient beings, also learn themselves and teach others in all aspects of vast knowledge. Inner science is the path of the three vehicles, and the mode of expression, the nature of nouns, conditions, and cases, and the way of connecting, the abbreviation and decomposition of letters, etc., as stated in the grammar treatises, because they are proficient in applying them without hindrance, they have definite and beautiful words, and the meaning is understood without distortion of sound, and that meaning is also established in accordance with direct perception, inference, and scriptural authority, to the side that does not conform to the measure
