Regarding meditation: Instead of thinking, "If others know this fault, I will be ashamed," it is better to meditate on being ashamed of oneself for one's own wrongdoings, regardless of whether others know or not. Such meditation is the best, as stated in the commentaries. Furthermore, this meditation with shame should be recognized as supreme through five aspects: having faith in the Mahayana Dharma that reveals shame and embarrassment; the nine thoughts as previously explained; attaining mastery over the mind of Samadhi; or from the eighth Bhumi onwards, spontaneously accomplishing without effort; not discriminating between oneself, others, and the three spheres of shame; and the conduct of Bodhisattvas in pure realms, which is synonymous with this, and therefore is the most important or supreme. Secondly, regarding steadfastness, there are two aspects: a concise statement and a detailed explanation. First, the steadfast courage of a Bodhisattva means that a Bodhisattva surpasses all other worldly beings and assemblies of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, being particularly distinguished by characteristics, distinctions, and immutability. Second, to explain the meaning of these three distinctions in detail, first, the characteristic of steadfastness is that diligence, Samadhi, and wisdom, in that order, are courage without discouragement, endurance without being moved by others, and understanding the meaning correctly and not changing from it, hence it is considered steadfast. Because these three Dharmas enable Bodhisattvas to proceed fearlessly on the path of practice. If fear arises, those without diligence will have the fear of discouragement, thinking, "I cannot accomplish the Bodhisattva conduct"; those without Samadhi will have the fear of being disturbed by discursive thoughts because they cannot focus their minds; those without wisdom will be confused because they do not know what the Bodhisattva conduct is, and will be helpless and fearful in their actions. These three, discouragement and so on, prevent the Bodhisattva's practice from being autonomous, thus causing the fear of "I cannot accomplish it." Therefore, to counteract these three fears, whichever of diligence, Samadhi, and wisdom is naturally or inherently accomplished, for these three primordial qualities, they cannot be taken away by adverse factors, hence it should be known as steadfastness.

Constantly and without effort, diligence is naturally accomplished, as well as concentration and wisdom are naturally accomplished, because they possess an innate or constant quality, so there is no discouragement or the like, and being supremely firm is the characteristic of firmness. Even for beginners, if the nature of the mind is not discouraged and is able to engage in activities, relying on just that, it can be known that this is called innate diligence. Secondly, the first division of firmness is eightfold: Natural firmness refers to the fact that due to the power of lineage, the realms of diligence, concentration, and wisdom, there is no fear of discouragement or the like in the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Aspirational firmness refers to, after generating the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, in order to attain great Bodhi and to completely liberate all sentient beings, making the aspiration, "May I not regress or change," whereby no matter where one is born, one will not change and will become firm. That is to say, the root of all the immeasurable aspirations of a Bodhisattva that arise up to the state of Buddhahood is the initial generation of Bodhicitta. Relying on this initial aspiration of generating Bodhicitta, all aspirations will arise, and the aspirations from then on will become increasingly firm. Non-attachment refers to relying on one's own benefit, not even considering body and life in order to accomplish one's own benefit, without attachment or fear. Being firm for the benefit of others refers to not becoming weary even when sentient beings engage in various wrong actions. Profound refers to relying on the meaning of Suchness, not being afraid of and having firm faith in the meaning of the profound emptiness that has no arising or ceasing from the beginning. Being firm in reliance on power refers to not being discouraged and having faith in accomplishing vast qualities such as clairvoyance, strength, and fearlessness. Not abandoning those who are difficult to tame and whose afflictions are extremely intense, but taming them for a long time with various methods, this is relying on fully maturing sentient beings. Thinking that I must accomplish the inconceivable qualities of the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya of the Buddhas, and the mind not turning back.
