It should be known that there is no need to seek anything in return for that (giving). If your giving is merely giving away objects of enjoyment to others, and you do not relinquish the fruit of obtaining enjoyment, then you will not become a Bodhisattva who is delighted to give without attachment to all things of enjoyment in future lives. Because, if in this life, even for a moment, you have no interest in giving, and you have a mind that does not want to give, then you will not be delighted to give for the sake of others out of compassion. Your giving seems not to give fruit to what has not been given, but rather to have an expectation of return. Thus, if you look for the return of the fruit of giving, it is not out of compassion for others that you consider it not to belong to you or not to be deserved. Because your giving is without expectation of return, you also do not take the ripening fruit as your own, but give it entirely to others. This is the way in which compassion speaks to giving, showing the way to train the mind in not being attached to body, enjoyment, and all roots of virtue for one's own sake, but giving them entirely to others. Compassion summarizes and praises the meaning of the merits of giving. The princes with love, etc., three verses, that is, the giving of the sons of the Buddhas with compassion is of six kinds: without fault, that is, giving without harming others. For example, robbing from others and giving to others, killing sentient beings and giving their flesh, and humiliating beggars, scolding the hungry with words, causing suffering in their hearts, and then giving, etc., these are giving without harming other sentient beings and giving properly and well. The giving of a pure place or basis is not to give unexamined things, such as impure things like poison and weapons, but to examine them and give pure and clean things. The giving that benefits is that by gathering through giving and causing them to practice virtue, those sentient beings who are the objects of giving will lead to the happiness of the fruits of heaven and liberation in future lives. And, by giving, abandoning all harm to one's own retinue, such as children and servants, not leaving their share, or giving wives and children to others.

Furthermore, knowing that giving will not contradict their minds or ultimately cause them great suffering, give to them. If they are very distressed, and giving possessions to inauspicious beings such as yakshas and rakshasas, etc., in short, not harming one's own retinue, is giving with subsequent protection. Giving without seeking is knowing that sentient beings are impoverished, and even if they do not specifically ask, giving from one's own hand for their benefit, not completely seeking other places to give, or not choosing a field of merit and seeking, saying give to this one, don't give to that one, but giving equally without partiality. Giving without attachment or clinging is giving without expecting reward or fruition. This is explained from the aspect of purifying faults. Again, from the aspect of qualities, there are nine types, such as giving everything or giving completely. Giving completely is not leaving anything un-given of inner and outer things, not leaving even a little. Giving extensively or widely is not giving small and meager things, but giving many and vast things. Giving the principal is not giving damaged, rotten, or unusable things, but giving things with perfect color, shape, and fragrance, and beautiful and precious objects. Giving constantly is not giving sometimes and not giving sometimes, but giving constantly and continuously. Giving joyfully is giving without a miserly mind, with joy to any beggar, whether giving or not giving. Giving without impurity is giving without expecting reward or fruition. Giving purely is the same meaning as the pure basis of giving mentioned above, which is giving pure objects. Dedicating to enlightenment is, after giving, not dedicating for the sake of the happiness of the heavenly realms and the peace of the hearers and solitary realizers, but dedicating for the benefit of all sentient beings, for the sake of attaining unsurpassed enlightenment, thereby moving towards unsurpassed enlightenment. Dedicating the root of virtue is the same meaning as the giving that benefits others mentioned above, which is gathering sentient beings through giving, causing them to move towards or abide in virtue. The way that happiness arises from giving in this way is: how the happiness of rejoicing in giving itself, and benefiting others.

The joy and happiness that accompanies it, and the joy and happiness that comes from perfecting the accumulations of Bodhi, the Bodhisattva who is satisfied with these three joys and has a loving heart, completely gives away all his possessions, and therefore feels joy. Those who have all the desired wealth, merely enjoying that wealth, will not feel such joy. Here, "those who have wealth" refers to the objects of the Bodhisattva's generosity, those who receive the desired wealth. They cannot feel joy like the giver, as explained in the commentary. Generally speaking, even those who enjoy the perfect wealth of the heavens have never experienced the joy of giving like a Bodhisattva. As it is said in The Collection of Precious Qualities: "The four continents, perfectly adorned, are like the ashes of spit. Giving brings joy, but obtaining the continents does not." As it is said. Seventh, explaining the cause of arising compassion: Compassion arises for sentient beings who are separated from practicing the six perfections. Because of stinginess, their minds become impoverished and miserly, and they are unable to give even a little. With loving-kindness, the faults of stinginess and the virtues of generosity are explained, and they are placed in the Dharma of generosity. To those who are of evil nature, cruel, and engage in sinful actions such as killing, with love, the Dharma of morality is taught, and they are placed in morality. To those whose minds are completely disturbed by anger, with love, the faults of anger and the Dharma of the virtues of patience are taught, and they are placed in patience. To those who are fond of ordinary activities, and because of laziness do not do virtuous deeds, the negligent, with love, the diligence that abandons laziness and the Dharma of diligence are taught, and they are placed in diligence. To those who are controlled by the objects of the five desires, and whose minds are always distracted, with compassion, the Dharma of meditation is taught, and they are placed in meditation. To those who cling to the contaminated aggregates as permanent, happy, self, and pure, and who manifest perverted clinging, with compassion, the faults of wrong wisdom are revealed, and they are placed in correct wisdom. Furthermore, the cause of the Bodhisattva's arising compassion is
