I pray to be born in a perfect state, and through the power of aspiration, no matter where I am reborn, may I take many births that benefit myself and others, and through this, may I fully ripen all sentient beings. First, great compassion is like the root of the latter five, it goes before as the root of all the qualities of a Bodhisattva. As it says in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence: "Venerable Sharada's son, just as breathing out and breathing in goes before the life force of a person, so too, for the sake of properly accomplishing the Great Vehicle, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva goes before." And as it says in the Noble Gaya Mountain Sutra: "The root of the Bodhisattva's Bodhicitta is great compassion, and the object is sentient beings." As it is said. Finally, making sentient beings ripen is like a tree bearing excellent, fully ripened fruit, this is the great tree of compassion. Therefore, relying on the root of great compassion, a trunk of endurance that can endure various sufferings for the sake of sentient beings will arise. Relying on the trunk of endurance, a branch of thinking of methods to liberate sentient beings from suffering will arise. Because one birth from the branch of thinking of methods cannot accomplish the benefit of limitless sentient beings, in all births, gradually praying to take the birth of immeasurable sentient beings, this is like a leaf. From the leaf of aspiration, a flower of rebirth as desired will arise for the sake of sentient beings. From the flower of rebirth, a fruit that makes sentient beings fully ripen will arise. Therefore, it is praised as being like a good tree. To explain this in detail, first, it is shown how if there is no root, the others will disappear: just as if a tree has no root, there will be nothing from the trunk to the fruit, so too, if there is no great compassion like a root, one will not willingly endure hardships for the sake of sentient beings, even worldly people will strive for the sake of those they love, but will not strive for the sake of others.

Moreover, just as the Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not engage in hardships for the sake of sentient beings. Bodhisattvas, due to the power of great compassion, never abandon the hardships they undertake for the benefit of sentient beings. If a wise person cannot bear to suffer for the sake of others, they will not even think of doing this or that for the benefit of sentient beings. Even if they have the means, they cannot accomplish it themselves, so they will not even think about it. If a person with a mind devoid of the thought of acting for the benefit of sentient beings, they will not aspire to attain a pure, untainted, and unpolluted rebirth that benefits sentient beings. Because the aspiration of a Bodhisattva is to act for the benefit of sentient beings, they take rebirth in samsara in that way, not like worldly people who perform virtuous deeds with the intention of attaining the happiness of the heavens, nor like Hearers and Solitary Realizers who abandon rebirth in samsara. If, due to the power of aspiration, one does not obtain a good rebirth that benefits sentient beings in this world, then one will not be able to fully ripen sentient beings in that way. Either one will be like worldly people who obtain rebirth due to the maturation of karma and be unable to ripen sentient beings, or one will be like Hearers and Solitary Realizers who sever the stream of rebirth and do not act for the benefit of sentient beings. Therefore, if there is no root—great compassion—then the five, from patience like a trunk to ripening sentient beings like a fruit, cannot arise. If there is a root, then the way in which others follow is explained as follows: Just as when the root of a tree is moistened by water, the root becomes stable and luxuriant, and then from the trunk to the fruit, everything becomes vast and luxuriant. The root is moistened by the water of compassion, or soaked in water. In the 'Commentary on the Steadfast Mind,' it says that soaking is loving-kindness. Some commentaries say that 'soaking' is like the fine rootlets of a tree's roots drinking the water of the earth, and the tree grows as a result, just as it is known as drinking with the feet. It also appears to be like the root of the root, but even if that is the case, it belongs to the root itself. What is being spoken of here is the root—compassion itself.
